What do U think 🤔
🚨 Card surcharges are being BANNED from October.
Sounds great… until you understand what’s really happening.
Banks are STILL charging the fees.
They’re STILL making billions.
The only change?
Small businesses are no longer allowed to pass that cost on.
At the moment, our EFTPOS machine automatically calculates the exact fee depending on the card used (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX etc).
We don’t guess. We don’t round up. We don’t profit.
That fee is taken by the bank BEFORE the money even hits our account — we don’t even see it land.
And sometimes we’re waiting 1–2 days for the rest of that money to clear.
From October, that transparency disappears.
We either:
👉 Absorb the cost (on 5–10% margins)
👉 Or raise prices, which are already stretched with current cost inflation.
So nothing is being “saved”… it’s just being hidden.
And if we choose to go cash-only to avoid those fees?
We’re the ones labelled “difficult” or “outdated”.
Banks can charge whatever they want…
But small businesses can’t decide how to recover it?
Make that ….make sense.
We’re seriously rethinking how we operate — because staying open has to come first.
