Recent guests and avid birdwatchers Kerry Fletcher and Mark Binns of BirdLife Australia taught us one way to differentiate between the Carnaby’s and Baudin’s black cockatoos – looking at the marri nuts they feed on. The Baudin’s make just small marks around the top of the nut to get the seeds out, while the Carnaby’s – with their big strong beaks – rip the nuts apart. Here’s a male Baudin’s feeding in a marri tree at Karri Patch (thanks to Mark for the photo) and (inset) some marri nuts after the Baudin’s has finished with them.

Thanks so much to recent guests Hedy, Steve and Elsbeth for their gift of Jane Scott’s Orchids of Margaret River and Australia’s Southwest Capes. We enjoyed looking at the many orchids at Karri Patch with you. This one looks like a sun orchid (Thelymitra macrophylla) and was spotted just by the driveway.

The Margaret River region isn’t just about wine – olive oil is one of the many other gourmet products made locally. The closest is just 4kms from Karri Patch – Petra Olive Oil Estate (251 Sheoak Drive) – and boasts a fantastic array of olive oil products and other gourmet food ingredients such as this excellent Apple Balsamic Vinegar, ideal with slow-roasted rolled pork. And at Wulura Farm (10kms away at 1071 Wildwood Road), a 4-litre refillable tin of the beautiful mild Leccino extra virgin olive oil combined a good quality product with low food miles and waste avoidance – perfect!

It’s just a four-minute drive (or a half-hour walk) from Karri Patch to the wonderful Yallingup Wood Fired Bread at Lot 7 McLachlan Road. A down south institution, these guys take bread to a whole new level – simple perfection in four types of sourdough loaf. Make sure you get there by 4pm – when hot these loaves are simply amazing, and they often sell out.
