Graduated from puppy school with flying colours. I was terribly anxious about the test but Charlie did everything perfectly. (There was food involved). The instructor was as surprised as me - kept saying " That's brilliant" in a flabbergasted way.

Evandale is open again. Here in our moated isle, in our gorgeous village, businesses are not just soldiering on but busy. Evandale is an easy drive from Launceston and only 2 hours from Hobart. The hub of the village is our gorgeous Ingleside Village Bakery directed by Jane Shaw. It's got the most beautiful garden courtyard for al fresco dining (with world famous in Evandale Pierre de Ronsard roses in summer). But it's equally lovely on a grey day with its roaring open fire. And the food - whether you want a full meal, a fast quiche for lunch, a scone or sinful cake with coffee - is fabulous. And they do turmeric lattes so in Evandale we can, however sadly, cope without Melbourne.

Come out to historic Evandale for this event featuring five rarely seen private gardens. Open Gardens in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Spring blossom continues with the great white cherry Tai Haiku and the stunning columnar pears (probably Chanticleer) which are everywhere in the village. Our neighbouring property has two Tai Haiku and I eye them with envy - sadly we have no more room!

It's tulip time - the earliest of all are the scarlet Princeps I have on pots on the deck. A wonderful tulip for pots because they don't mind heating up in summer and it means you never have to lift them! There are red Ile de la France on the other deck and Red Saigon outside the apartment - anyone detect a theme here?

The nicest thing about Box Cottage Apartment is the people you meet. Last week Ron and Lynne Fellowes and Effie, Ron's restored FN 1910 Belgian bike were our guests. Ron has ridden Effie from Nepal to the Belgian factory where she was made, with Lynne following on behind on public transport. Lynne is a superb mixed media artist in her own right. More about them can be found at oldblokeonabike.com and lynnefellowes.com They have even written a book No Room for Watermelons about their adventures. Lynne made Ron's costume. We hope to welcome them back to the Penny Farthing Festival in February.

It's the little things...at this time of the year, I'm entranced by the tiny spring treasures that are springing up in the woodland garden. The epimedium, the trout lilies (the yellow Pagoda) and the gorgeous white anemone blanda that I thought was lost but has appeared among the primroses...

The blossom bridal shower continues with our two matched weeping white cherries, Prunus Snow Fountain. This is only their third year - we took out two beautiful but too big conifers which cut off the deck from the garden. Now we have this gorgeous spring show.

Box Cottage sings the blues...spring is especially rich with blue flowers. At Box Cottage Apartment door, the dark and pale blue hyacinths are in flower. In the garden, there are pots of blue pansies growing next to the dark blue grape hyacinths, while the special muscari neglectum with its ink-blue caps flourishes in an urn. And in the woodland garden, there is the gorgeous azure scilla sibirica.

At Box Cottage Apartment we pride ourselves in using Launceston's finest coffee, Ritual. It's ethically sourced from growers around the world but roasted in Launceston. At the Launceston Harvest Market on Saturdays it's a ritual (pun intended) to have a coffee and replenish supplies. I love trying new blends but often come back to the original Amelia's - a blend of washed Pacaybal from Guatemala, a washed El Roble from Costa Rica and a natural Gelana Abaya from Ethiopia. Amelia says it has a rich malty sweetness, with hints of chocolate and raspberry. That's what you'll find in the apartment!
