Thanks to everyone who came along to the Margaret Tucker Hostel NAIDOC Breakfast!

It was a relaxed and meaningful morning with great company, strong coffee, and good tucker!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, and it felt right to gather in a way that was simple, generous, and connected. That’s what this breakfast is all about.

Jason Tamiru opened the morning with a smoking ceremony and didjeridoo performance. Mullum Creations served up a beautiful breakfast and much-needed coffee. 3KND Radio were back again, capturing voices from the community, and James Henry documented the morning through his photography.

A big thanks as well to Ms NAIDOC Ky-ya Nicholson-Ward and Mr NAIDOC Tyison Galway for joining us.

We’re proud to co-host this event each year with Hope Street Youth and Family Services, continuing our shared commitment to supporting First Nations young women and young families.

We loved hosting our first NAIDOC Breakfast since 2019! It was a morning filled with community spirit, meaningful conversations, and delicious hot breakfast.

We were thrilled to have 3KND Radio broadcasting live from their brand-new mobile van for the first time, making it even more special that we were their inaugural community broadcast!

The morning started with a beautiful smoking ceremony by Nakia Firebrace, setting a powerful tone for the event.

Co-hosted with Hope Street and Margaret Tucker Hostel, we have signed an MOU to work together in providing vital services to Aboriginal women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Worrelle Blow and Hope Street Acting CEO Sue Scott spoke with 3KND about the impactful work we're doing and the exciting plans we have for the future.

With over 50 people in attendance, the event was a fantastic reminder of the strength and resilience of our community. We’re grateful for everyone who joined us and look forward to continuing this important work together.

As we observe National Reconciliation Week from May 27 to June 3, we at Margaret Tucker Hostel are reminded of the importance of connection, respect, and action.

This year’s theme, Now More Than Ever, calls on all Australians to continue the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and there have been moments that challenge our resolve. But now, more than ever, we must stay engaged and committed. The 6.2 million Australians who voted YES have shown their dedication to better outcomes for First Nations people, standing with us in solidarity.

The journey of reconciliation requires us to tackle unfinished business—truth-telling, treaty-making, understanding our shared history, and addressing racism. It’s about creating a future where the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard and respected across our nation.

We continue to support and uplift our community, working tirelessly towards reconciliation. This National Reconciliation Week, let’s all commit to being proactive, standing up against racism, and reinforcing the rights and voices of First Nations peoples.

Join us in this important journey.

It’s National Close the Gap Day!

Today, at Margaret Tucker Hostel, we stand in solidarity and commitment on National Close the Gap Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of our ongoing journey towards equality, self-determination, and improved life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As we reflect on the resilience and strength of the world's oldest living cultures, we also acknowledge the urgent need for action. It is clear that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must be at the forefront of decisions that affect their communities. True progress lies in genuine partnership, consultation, and listening to the voices that know best what their communities need.

The themes of this year’s report are Progressing Voice, Treaty, Truth, Leadership and Governance and Building our Economies. They are explored through case studies, which are exemplars of Blak excellence. The themes speak to economic, social, political and cultural determinants of health that are crucial to commitments by Australian governments to Closing the Gap.

Let's continue to raise our voices, show our support, and work together towards a future where the gap is closed, and equity is realised for every Indigenous Australian.

In recognition of Homelessness Week 2023 - Monday August 7 to Sunday August 13, we at Margaret Tucker Hostel want to draw attention to the pressing issue of homelessness, a challenge that disproportionately impacts our community. This year's theme, “It’s time to end homelessness”, speaks volumes to our mission.

Although we constitute around 3.2% of Australia's population, we represented around 20% of the total people experiencing homelessness on Census night in 2016. This discrepancy is stark and highlights the challenges we face. Particularly notable is the issue of severe overcrowding which disproportionately affects our mob and communities.

Yet we are resilient, resourceful, and relentless. We're working tirelessly towards the socio-economic outcome set by the National Agreement on Closing the Gap - by 2031, 88% of our people will be living in appropriately sized housing.

Housing is one of the priority areas identified under the Closing the Gap framework. Through our work, and the efforts of community-controlled housing services across the country, we strive to provide suitable, affordable housing options that reflect the needs and priorities of our young women .

Homelessness services have supported over 314,100 of our mob since July 2011, with the number of clients steadily increasing over time. The reasons why our community seeks assistance vary greatly, but common factors include family and domestic violence, housing crisis, and inadequate or inappropriate housing conditions.

As an organisation, we offer a safe haven for our young women, providing supported crisis accommodation in a culturally supportive environment. Our work embodies the spirit of this year's Homelessness Week - “It’s time to end homelessness”. Let's amplify this message and work together to work toward eliminating homelessness in our community. Because everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
