Fremantle Prison YHA has all the added comfort of a modern backpacker’s hostel - a mix of private and shared rooms, WiFi, new facilities - all within a charming historic building. This Fremantle Prison hostel has an additional purpose-built building with ensuited private rooms for the luxurious traveller. Perfectly-preserved Victorian-style guards’ cottages are also available. history displayed throughout the hostel during your stay! World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison was built in the 1850s with the first convicts occupying it in 1855, all the way up until 1991. The women’s division of the prison is now the Fremantle Prison YHA. Group Booking is available at Fremantle Prison YHA. YHA acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, the Whadjuk peoples of the Nyoongar Nation. We acknowledge and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and to the extended Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Community.

Our weekly activities are a great way to meet fellow travellers. Mondays are all about trivia night, come along and even if you don’t know a thing, you’ll leave with a few new fun facts and having made some new friends.

Fancy yourself as the Prison trivia champion? Join us next Monday at 8pm in the dining room. Need more info on what we’ve got planned? Just ask our staff or check the activities board in reception.

✨ HAPPY NEW YEAR ✨

As the sun sets on 2025, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what has truly been an incredible year.

We completed a full renovation of our downstairs cell floors using locally sourced Jarrah floorboards, preserving the heritage charm of our buildings while strengthening them for the future. This year we hosted 180 memorable activities, from line dancing classes to Indigenous movie nights, helping our guests strengthen their connection with each other and knowledge of the local area all while having a laugh.

We also recycled over 18,000 containers, raising $1,800 for various charitable causes, proudly passed our HI Quality and Sustainability certification, and were honoured to receive YHA Australia’s Housekeeping Team of the Year award.

Most importantly, we welcomed thousands of guests who filled our spaces with laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories.

Happy Christmas/Holidays/Summer/Thursday - whatever floats your boat! Earl and the Grinch might not share the same views, colors, background but they definitely share a love for cookies - and that‘s all that matter, right? Christmas should be a reminder that we are all in this ride together and shouldn’t judge or mistreat anyone who is different. And what better place to celebrate diversity, tolerance, respect and inclusivity than a hostel!

Run by the amazing every Tuesday morning at 8am, these sessions are the perfect way to stretch out, slow down and start the day feeling refreshed and energised.

Last week Earl rolled out his mat and gave it a go… and let’s just say he’s now a big fan. Who knew an elf could nail a yoga pose? ✨

Earl might be an Elf, but even he needs a pick me up sometimes. After a busy festive period, he stopped by .o.p.coffee for a delicious cup to keep him going. Between spreading Christmas cheer and exploring Fremantle, a good coffee was exactly what he needed to recharge and get back to his Elf duties ☕️🎄

Today Earl expanded his internship, rolling up his sleeves and lending a hand to our housekeeping team 🧹✨

After being named Housekeeping Team of the Year at our national conference in August, we’re still raising the bar and not resting on our laurels. With a little sprinkle of Earl’s magic and a whole lot of hard work from our incredible team, we’re keeping our property sparkling during this busy time of year.

Today’s adventures took Earl to the Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre 🖤💛❤️

WACC celebrates local Aboriginal art, culture and history through workshops, exhibitions, music and film.
Open Wednesday–Friday, 10am–3pm, they also run seasonal workshops aligned with the Nyoongar calendar.

Their Birak workshop program launches in January, check out their website for details!

Earl has been busy exploring the property, and today he discovered one of our favourites, the giant chess set! ♟️

Win or lose, it’s all part of the fun. After all, nothing beats a game or two while travelling. You’ll find the chess set in the prison yard.
