Russell Troop Hall has become the new home of the Gilwell Park Heritage Team.

This thoughtfully curated space brings together the iconic character of Russell Troop Hall with stories, artefacts and treasures that reflect the rich history of Gilwell Park and the generations who have passed through it.

Importantly, this isn’t a static museum space. The hall remains a functional and flexible venue, continuing to support training courses, meetings and shared meals for the many groups who use the park.

It’s a space that honours our past while remaining firmly part of the living, working heart of Gilwell Park.

🚨 Extreme Fire Danger – Site Closure & Event Update 🚨

Due to the Extreme Fire Danger forecast for today, Gilwell Park Adventure Centre is closed for the day.

With safety front of mind, we have also made the difficult decision to postpone our 100 Year Centenary event scheduled for tomorrow, 10th January.

A large number of our planned displays, activities and exhibitors are unable to attend due to road closures and the risk of entering a bushland area under these conditions.

We know many people were looking forward to celebrating this special milestone with us, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding as we prioritise the safety of our community, staff, volunteers and visitors.

We’ll share an update on a new date for the centenary celebrations as soon as it’s confirmed. Please stay safe and keep an eye on local conditions.

Thank you for your patience and support.

De Molnar Hall has had a small but impactful flooring makeover, with the old carpet tiles replaced by Messmate hybrid flooring.

The warm, outdoorsy tones bring a more natural feel to the space and help ground the building within its bushland surroundings, while also creating a more durable and practical surface for the wide range of groups who use the hall.

A subtle change, but one that makes a big difference to how the space feels and functions.

Gilwell in England received its name from the estate just out of London donated to the Chief Scout of the World, Baden-Powell, in 1919 by Mr de Bois Maclaren; as a camping ground for London Scouts and a Training Ground for Scout Leaders.

In 1924, several Victorian Leaders attended the Wembley Jamboree and, afterwards, qualified for their ‘Wood Badge’ at courses held at this camp. Two of the Leaders were so outstanding that they were recommended to be Deputy Camp Chiefs (DCC) - ones qualified to run similar courses. These were Mr C.A. (Arch) Hoadley and Mr E.H.C. (Tom) Russell. They then ran the first Victorian Course at Lilydale in 1925.

Mr Russell decided that Scouting needed a permanent Training Camp. So, on his mother’s property near Gembrook, he built four sleeping huts, the centre part of the existing Russell Troop Hall (which was called Group Hall), also a chapel and named the camp Gilwell after its English namesake. The second Wood Badge course was held here in January 1926, after which Mrs Russell donated the eleven acres to the Scout Association.

Less than a week out from Christmas, and Gilwell Park has still found room for one more meaningful project.

A huge thank you to Russell Bradd and the youngest member of the Gilwell Heritage Team, Lachie, who worked through challenging heat to complete this beautifully crafted new retaining wall along the walkway to the Chapel. This wall now forms the foundation of the Scouts Victoria War Memorial and garden.

The finished result speaks volumes about the care, skill and pride that has gone into this work.

This project would not have been possible without funding support from the Victoria Remembers Grants. Once complete, the Gilwell Memorial Walk will provide a place for reflection and remembrance, honouring the legacy and sacrifice of Scouters from all walks of life who have given so much to Scouting and the wider community.

The team at Gilwell Park Adventure Centre has officially stepped into our new campsite uniform, and we couldn’t be prouder of what it represents.

Built for long days outdoors and confident leadership on the activity bases, the new design brings a cleaner, more unified look across the park. It’s practical, comfortable, sustainable and reflects the standard we set for every experience delivered at Gilwell.

Proudly designed in Torquay, Victoria, our new XTM uniform is made using sustainable practices from a B Corp certified supplier.

It’s a fresh look for a team that continues to set the benchmark for what Authentic Adventure experiences look like. 🌱
