We are nearing the end of GPC Fitter Apprentice Training group 1.
I recently designed an offset smoker as their project and have been working very closely with GPC’s Drafting Trainee over the past month. The detail in the drawings
are next level, and this week has seen the 1st Group of five diesel fitter apprentices participate in this project.
Tomorrow is their 4th and last day, so they will have their smokers finished by lunchtime.
One of them stayed back today to finish their smoker so we can cook lunch on it tomorrow.
Smoked pork ….. mmm 🤤

Well done team!!

More group photos coming tomorrow too.

Our stubby coolers made their way to Birdsville and on top of Big Red last month!

Oh how the stubby cooler Design has changed over the years.

I leave them wherever I go, maybe you’ll find one at the Birdsville Hotel or the Middleton Hotel or at the Racetrack tomorrow?

Do you know of anyone who wants to improve or advance their practical welding skills?

Do you know of any experienced welders looking to refine or Improve their skill to an ‘Advanced’ skill level?

Due to recent enquiries, we are seeking further expressions of interest for persons who may be looking for welding lessons or one-on-one skills coaching.

This will suit Boilermaker / Welders, Fitters, or Electricians who are looking for an opportunity to refine their skills on welding pipe, tube, or special class plate weld tests. We are focused on helping you candidates to weld at the high standards required for shutdowns and construction projects.

Q1. What can we offer?
Simply based on your responses and preference or interest, we can decide if it will be more beneficial to offer the following:
1. Week Day ‘4 hour half day’,
2. Week Day ‘8 hour full day’,
3. ‘4 hour week night’,
4. On a Saturday (4-hour half day or 8-hour full day)

Q2. What welding processes can be used?
1. We have 5 welding bays that can be used for GMAW (mig), FCAW (flux core), MMAW (stick), & High Frequency GTAW (tig).
2. Of the 5 weld bays, one weld bay can be used for Aluminium Tig Welding, and another for Aluminium Pulse Mig Welding.

Q3. What would you need to bring?
1. Your welding helmet, respiratory protection, welding gloves, full length cotton drill work clothes, steel cap work boots, clear safety glasses/eye protection, and a water bottle.
2. If you would like to refine or improve with the use of your own welding machine, then you may also bring that, and we can help you to understand how best to use your welding machine as well.

Q4. What would the approximate costs be?
1. It is difficult to establish the cost without knowing exactly what you would be doing or what materials you would be using, but the costs for teacher's time, consumables, utilities, basic materials & material preparation costs, would start at approximately:
1. A 4-hour Half Day: :$275+GST
2. A 4-hour Evening: $350+GST
3. A Full Day: $500+GST

*Understandably, to keep the costs down for you, we need to run these sessions with a minimum of 4 persons, so please speak with your friends as well.
*Smaller groups, or one-on-one sessions can be arranged, but priced on application.

Note:
1. For experienced welders, your test coupons may be submitted for non-destructive testing for additional testing costs, and should the results be compliant, then we can issue you with an independent welder qualification record which you may be able to give to your employer. We would strongly recommend you ask your employer to pay for the NDT Testing and Qualification Records though. In any case, we will happily work with your employer to discuss your experience and progress at your request.

2. This is non-accredited practical welding tuition. ISC cannot guarantee that any level of competence or skill will be learned, gained or attained by participants. If accredited training is required, then please speak to us as we work with an RTO to deliver accredited training as required.

Please direct message us if interested and tag anyone you know who may also be interested.

New stubby coolers have arrived. Not quite as nice as the last batch, but hey, they look cool and keep the beers cool too. They also work good for networking and getting our name and trusted brand out there.
Pay a visit to ISC at Shed 5/2 Dennis Street (facing onto Pioneer Dr.) and see for yourself.

Due to popular demand and regular complaint, at ISC each of the weld bays now have High Frequency Tig Welders.

Cross section view showing a lack of fusion defect in a Stainless Steel Tig Weld Test Coupon.

Poor ole mate was quite nervous during his test and produced a neat looking weld test, but all was in vain as the coupon failed to meet the requirements of the ASME IX Radiograph.

Lack of fusion was detected from approximately 7-9 o’clock in a 6G test position (his nervous & gammy hand side).

Possible Cause/s:
1. Unnecessarily using a grinder during inter passes can leave a sharp groove (should always maintain a rounded 5+mm radius in all grooves.
2. Technique - walking the cup can lay the tungsten electrode back on an incline angle that inadvertently reduces arc pe*******on and by feeding the Tig wire into the weld pool, the molten wire can flow into a sharp groove and solidify rather than fusing completely.

Anyway; We got him back in and briefly gave him a few little pointers on how to tune-out and simply retrain/trick his brain for Left/Right hand technique swapping.

He was much more at ease and delivered a fantastic retest!
