Gold Coast is located in Queensland

The Gold Coast is a coastal city in southeastern Queensland on the east coast of Australia. It is the second most populous city in the state, the sixth most populous city in the country, and the most populou

s non-capital city in Australia. The Gold Coast has the largest cross-state metropolitan area population in Australia, due to the inclusion of Tweed Heads, New South Wales in its metropolitan area. The Gold Coast's metropolitan area converges with that of Greater Brisbane, forming part of an urban conurbation of over 3 million people. While the origin of the city's name is debatable, the name "Gold Coast" was bestowed upon the city by real estate investors. The first settlement in what is now South East Queensland was as a penal colony at Redcliffe. The Gold Coast region remained largely uninhabited by Europeans until 1823 when explorer John Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach. The hinterland's red cedar supply attracted people to the area in the mid-19th century. Later in 1875, Southport was surveyed and established and grew a reputation as a secluded holiday destination for upper class Brisbane residents. The Gold Coast region grew significantly after the establishment of the Surfers Paradise hotel in the late 1920s. The area boomed in the 1980s as a leading tourist destination and in 1994, the Gold Coast City local government area was expanded to encompass the majority of the Gold Coast's metropolitan area, becoming the second most populous local government area in Australia after the City of Brisbane. The Gold Coast is today a major tourist destination with its sunny subtropical climate, surfing beaches, canal and waterway systems, its high-rise dominated skyline, theme parks, nightlife, and rainforest hinterland, making tourism one of its most significant industries. Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games

IMPORTANT SAFETY ADVICE for The Spit:

Following on from yesterday's post, expert waterman and photographer Luke Sorensen has given this follow up image and further bit of advice, detailing just how dangerously deceptive this spot can be even on days with mild and gentle conditions. The following from Luke β€”

"You can see in this photo just how gentle and appealing this spot under the pier looks in terms of attracting unsuspecting swimmers, especially for tourists and visitors from outside the Gold Coast who can get instantly caught unawares. Yesterday when this was taken, there was a pretty wicked current running and swirling right here under the surface, invisible to most people.

For me to dive in and around this area even in modest conditions takes a fair bit of concentration because as you get just a few steps into the water here, there's a very strong undercurrent and rip moving from north to south which can grab you pretty quick and pull you in. Right now there's a full drop off too, where it goes from being 12 inches deep to 8 or 10 feet deep within just a metre or so of sand. That undercurrent then connects to a strong rip that runs out away from the shore, right up through the pylons and it has a zone which often stretches for about 20m on either side of the jetty itself. As that rip sucks through the jetty area it can swirl and bend, creating undertows and reverse currents as well.

Once you're in this zone under the pier there's not much the average swimmer can do to get out other than get sucked underwater or out towards the far end of the pier, it can get pretty dicey pretty quick if you're not fully aware of what to do and proficient in your decisions and movements. Add in the potential to get bounced into a sharp pylon and cop a few waves on the head, it's the kind of place that breeds panic for some people, and that's when an already bad situation can suddenly turn life threatening for inexperienced people.

Over the years I've seen everything from novice surfers, visiting beachgoers, even people's dogs get sucked right into this zone within seconds and suddenly be heading fast out towards the open sea, and we've even had to help fish a few people out before.

For me, the scariest part is shown right in this photo β€” just how appetising and innocent it looks on the surface and how a toddler or child could take just two or three steps into the water here and with a little surge of a wave they could be ripped from the beach and underwater within a split second moment.

I would say to anyone visiting with kids or even going in for a dip themselves, steer well clear of this spot and head down or up to the flagged area β€” best to leave this spot alone for sure."
