Horse-Driven Ingenuity on O’Brien’s Hill

At the Consol Mine above Grenfell, a timber whim still stands—built for horses to walk in circles, turning a drum that raised gold-bearing rock from deep underground.

The whim is one of the few intact examples in New South Wales. It’s a rare survivor of goldfields ingenuity—where miners adapted what they had, to reach what lay below.

We invite you to tread the path of the animals who brought to bear the hard-won reef gold to the light of day - crowning Grenfell as one of the richest reef goldfields in the colony.

🌾 Beneath Grenfell’s golden hills lies a story of bold ambition and quiet brilliance.

The Consol Mine—short for “Consolidated”—was no ordinary dig. In the 1870s, it united scattered leases into one strategic operation, allowing deeper shafts, better equipment, and sustained investment.

Grenfell’s gold ran deep, and the Consol Mine was ready to follow it.

While Hill End dazzled with the Holtermann Nugget and Sofala thrived on alluvial riches, these fields were often fragmented—short-lived booms, individual claims, and limited infrastructure. Lucknow, near Orange, had its own underground success, but Grenfell’s Consol Mine stood apart for its foresight and enduring returns.

Today, many of the remnants remain dotted on the town’s edges—waiting to be rediscovered.

Created to honour the official guests of the Henry Lawson Festival of Arts, the walk features bronze plaques embedded in the footpaths along Main Street, each commemorating a contributor to Australia’s cultural landscape.

This is the birthplace of Henry Lawson, one of Australia’s most beloved poets. Born in a tent on the goldfields in 1867, Lawson’s words captured the soul of the bush—and his legacy still lives on in quiet, beautiful ways throughout our town.

🧭 Travelling north on the Henry Lawson Way? Need a breath of fresh air, a stretch of the legs - curious for a glimpse of local pride? Grenfell’s got you covered.

🛣️ As you travel north, keep an eye out for a charming white church on your left—that’s your gentle cue you’ve arrived at Taylor Park, Grenfell’s ceremonial heart.

🌿 This is where our community gathers to mark national occasions and to enjoy many local events. At the eastern entrance, you’ll find an obelisk, a tribute to our forebears which was relocated from our new Main Street.

🎶 Wander further in and explore the historic rotunda, built by volunteers using donated materials - it’s a great spot to grab a photo.

🛝Nearby, you’ll find bathrooms and a handful of new facilities—including a play space for all ages.

🌸✨ Grenfell’s Iris Garden is now in full bloom — and it’s a sight to behold.

Located at the base of O’Brien’s Hill, this vibrant garden offers a gentle burst of colour and calm.

To visit the garden, simply turn off the Mid Western Highway at the Eagle and Nest sculpture, or take a peaceful walk down from the lookout, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by irises in full bloom. Right now, they’re at their peak — a fleeting moment of spring beauty not to be missed.
