Bulls will be bulls. Meet the most destructive animal on the farm. These nearly 1000kg beasts are capable of just about anything. No fence is immune to an errant bullfight. They scuffle amongst themselves in their quest for dominance of the others. Sometimes, when a couple of evenly matched competitors face off, the loser can be very badly injured, even terminally. We treat them with the respect they deserve, they are capable of crushing you in a second. Generally they are placid and even a little curious, like all cows. They have a space they like to own and if you infringe upon that space you get a warning. A slight shake of the head is all it takes and we retreat, knowing one false move…. They generally don’t care about us however, they’re bigger, we’re nothing. It must be said, they are completely magnificent animals, a ball of strength and testosterone and an integral part of the farm.

For a 120-year-old shed, she knows how to party.
…
The Grain Shed was built down on the Kimo river flats more than a century ago. These days, its previous working life is well behind it.
Now it has one job — weddings.
Long tables, candlelight, ch*****ne, speeches, hugs, questionable dance moves and a room full of your favourite people carrying on well into the night.

Flash Jacks is our place in sleepy little Gundagai town.

An old red-brick building, a rambling native garden and nine rooms in the heart of a Rural gem. A place to arrive, put the bags down and wander out to see a little of the town we call home.

While Kimo Estate is about experiencing life on the farm — the paddocks, hills and wide open spaces — Flash Jacks is about experiencing country town life.

Walk the old streets. Visit the quirky little volunteer museum. Find your pub for dinner, the choice is yours 😊. Have a slow morning. Explore Gundagai and the surrounding countryside.

We’re a bit late, but we’re getting there… 🌳

And the first of the trees are finally going in the ground.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our tree planting programme. Together, you donated more than $500, we matched it (and then some 😊), and that support has helped us get around 100 new trees ready to plant across Kimo.
…
Some will be planted in open paddocks, where they’ll need the full treatment — solid guards to give them a fighting chance against sheep and cattle. In lighter traffic areas, we’ve managed to repurpose old oil drums as guards, while trees going into destocked areas can get away with something a little simpler.
…
We’ve chosen different species for different parts of the farm.
…
White Box for the open country. Kurrajongs for the rocky hills. Golden Wattle to create some natural screening around working areas. And a mixture of other native trees and shrubs in areas we’ve taken stock out of, adding more diversity and habitat back into the landscape.
…
It’s not a grand revegetation project happening overnight. It’s 100 little trees, planted with help from our community in places where we think they’ll make a difference — improving the landscape, supporting wildlife and building something that can keep growing for decades to come.

We’re gave a few days next week to finish the job. 🌱

September at JR’s hut, lush greenery as far as the eye can see. It’s a good season again after a few tougher ones over the last few years. These springs make farming seem infinitely easier than normal. The animals are in terrific condition. There’s still plenty of things to do but worrying about what to feed them isn’t one of them.

Spring at Kimo. 🌱
There are few better sights on a farm than this.
After months of watching the hills through winter, spring arrives and suddenly there’s grass everywhere. The sheep spread out across the paddocks, the lambs start putting on weight, and the whole farm seems to come alive again.
At this time of year there’s really only one job for them — keep their heads down and eat.
Green hills, fat sheep and longer days.
It doesn’t get much better than that.

Spring at the Ecohuts 🌼
There’s something pretty special about this time of year at Kimo.
The days are getting longer, but it’s still cool enough to light the fire at night. The hills are turning green, the paddocks are full, and the sheep and cattle are making the most of spring feed.
And then there’s the hot tub — warm water, cool evening air and that enormous Kimo Valley stretching out below you.
Winter has its charms, but spring might just be our favourite time in the hills.
Come and hide away for a couple of days. 🌿
