Built around 1868, it was originally the “Willogleechie Hotel” similar to the Willogoleechie Station across the road. Willogoleechie Station was part of a larger run named Wandilla, which in it’s time encompassed land almost down to Burra.
At one time the Hotel was a stop for Cobb & Co for travellers heading north to Melrose, etc.
A rich tapestry of life has passed through the doors of the hotel over the years, people from every occupation and of every circumstance.
There is also a half-hidden family history, with living relatives of one of the original publicans still in the area, a resident (benign) ghost, and the hotel walls have echoed many conversations over the years, if only could they speak.
Some years ago someone purchased a half-cross Dingo, which had been well serviced by a taxidermist, at an auction.
This creature appeared on display behind the bar, and henceforth the Hotel has been referred to as the “Wild Dog”.
In 2016, the Hallett Community Post Agency was moved to the Hotel.
