In Japan,
June is the rainy season called “Tsuyu” (梅雨).

Do you know how Japanese people enjoy this time of year?
For us, rain is not always something unpleasant.

Taking a long soak in a warm bath on a cool rainy day.
Enjoying a cup of tea or reading a book while listening to the sound of rain.
And falling asleep in a warm futon while listening to raindrops gently falling on the roof.
Watching the trees and gardens become greener after the rain.

These are some of the simple pleasures that come with the rainy season.

At Shizuka Ryokan, you can also experience this Japanese way of enjoying rainy days.

Why not slow down and enjoy a quieter moment this winter?🌱

When was the last time you truly rested?

In Japan, there is a word called “Yohaku.”
Yohaku can have many meanings, but for us, it is the space we leave in our lives. Space in our day. Space in our mind. Space to simply pause.

These days, we often hear the word “wellness.”
But we believe wellness can be found in simple moments.

Taking time to soak in a warm bath.
Enjoying a cup of tea while watching the trees move in the breeze.
Putting away your phone and reading a book while listening to birds singing outside.

At Shizuka Ryokan, we try to create a place for these moments.
This Global Wellness Day, perhaps it is time to create a little more Yohaku in your life.

Have you ever had Ramen? 🍜
(Only available in June)

If you have, then you probably already know how comforting a bowl of ramen can be when the weather becomes colder.

A carefully prepared broth with rich dashi flavour warms the body from the inside. Seasonal ingredients and chashu pork, slowly cooked for many hours, bring depth and balance to each bowl.

Our Japanese chef prepares ramen in the traditional way, using recipes and techniques from Japan.

Ramen is available only on Fridays, and it will be taking a break after the end of June.

Join us this Friday for a bowl of ramen for the last chance🍜

Wintering the Japanese way

In Japan, winter is the season for “Yojo,” which means taking care of the body and mind.
During winter, people enjoy spending slow and peaceful time in onsen.

Especially in the cold season, the warmth of hot water feels very comforting for both the body and sprit.

Feeling the cold winter air on the face while soaking in warm water is one of the traditional winter pleasures loved by Japanese people for many years.

At Shizuka Ryokan, you can experience this authentic Japanese style winter surrounded by the beautiful nature of Hepburn spring.

After warming the body, continue your relaxation with an oil massage treatment, allowing both mind and body to fully relax.

This winter, why not try a different and special way of spending time?

A slower rhythm for colder days.

As the weather becomes colder, many people start looking for quieter and warmer ways to spend their time.
Longer baths. Hot tea. Earlier evenings indoors.

At Shizuka, this season changes the rhythm of the stay a little. Warm water, soft light and a slower pace start to feel especially good this time of year.
We have a warm louge where you can simply rest or have a cultural conversation with Nakai san.

We'd be happy to share a slice of Japan here at shizuka ryokan🍵

Have you ever slept on a futon bed?

For a long time in Japan, people slept on futons laid directly onto tatami flooring every night.

In traditional Japanese homes, rooms were not separated into fixed bedrooms and living rooms.
The same room changed throughout the day.
Meals were shared there, tea was served there, and at night, futons were brought out for sleep.
In the morning, everything was folded away again to make space for the day ahead.

Many guests at Shizuka try sleeping on a futon for the first time here.
Some are surprised by how comfortable and calming it feels. When you sleep closer to the floor, you feel something different.

Here at , this is still part of the traditional ryokan experience in Japan.🇯🇵

What a Japanese breakfast actually includes?

A traditional Japanese breakfast is usually quite different from a Western one.
Rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickles, small seasonal dishes and tea are commonly served together.
It's called "Teishoku style."🍱

In Japan, breakfast is often prepared to gently wake up the body rather than fill it too quickly.

At Shizuka, breakfast changes with the season and is served every morning for both in-house guests and external guests.

Autumn afternoons at Shizuka move slowly.

A bath before sunset.
Tea while the light changes outside.
The garden becoming quieter as the air cools.
Some guests read. Some sleep. Some simply sit by the window for a while.

By late afternoon, steam from the rotenburo becomes easier to see, and staying in the water feels especially comfortable.

Would you like to have a quieter evening at Japanese Ryokan?🍁
