As we watch other old buildings being brought back to life in New Norfolk, we remember the days when few seemed to want these glorious, old buildings. Very few people were moving into town, and we were constantly asked "Why had we come?" and "Why are you investing here?"
We were very amused by some of the gossip stories that filtered back to us at the time.

But we knew why. We had seen it in Port Douglas and then in the Swan Valley. We predicted back then that it would take 20 years but it would happen.

And we are so happy that we are still here to see it!

The Woodbridge has played such an important part in Tasmania's history.
The first (wooden) bridge over the Derwent River was built by William Sharland in the early 1830's. He was the third owner of Woodbridge, and named the house after the bridge he was building.
Woodbridge can be seen to the right of the image, and the Toll House is to the left. The bridge was built by a consortium of businessmen as an paying investment.
The bridge helped open up the land on the other side of the river and was the start of communication links to the west coast of Tasmania.
