Planning for growth that respects place

We recently supported the preparation of a draft structure plan for the coastal townships of Scamander and Beaumaris, led by our Planning and Engagement teams.

Located on Tasmania’s east coast, Scamander and Beaumaris are close knit coastal communities experiencing renewed growth, with changing demographics and increasing seasonal tourism. Break O’Day Council engaged Era to provide strategic planning and community engagement services to help shape an evidence based direction for how these towns may evolve over the next 15 years.

Our approach focused on understanding what makes these communities distinctive. Through detailed place analysis, consideration of multiple growth scenarios and two rounds of targeted community engagement, we worked closely with Council, key stakeholders and locals to ensure the draft plan reflects how people live in, use and care for these towns.

The result strengthens Scamander’s role as the area’s activity and visitor hub, while protecting the landscapes and coastal systems that underpin local identity.

We were thrilled to see that this project received unanimous Council endorsement last week, highlighting our detailed approach and comprehensive community engagement as particular strengths. This project is a strong example of how tailored, place based planning grounded in local values, environmental context and practical implementation pathways can support confident decision making at both local and state levels.

Local centres are more than places to shop — they're places where communities connect.

We're pleased to have supported the planning scheme amendment process for the Spring Farm Village Centre in Kingston.

Located within a growing part of Kingborough, Spring Farm Village Centre has become an important destination for shopping, services and day-to-day needs. As communities evolve, centres like these play an increasingly important role in providing convenient access to goods and services close to where people live.

The amendment supports the continued evolution of the Village Centre, enabling additional commercial opportunities alongside the existing retail and business uses. It represents another step in the ongoing development of a centre that serves both the local community and the broader region.

Working closely with Kingborough Council, Era Advisory provided planning expertise to help navigate the statutory planning process and support a proposal aligned with the strategic intent for the precinct.

Projects like this demonstrate the role planning plays in creating vibrant, accessible and well-functioning centres that meet the changing needs of communities over time.

Late last month, Era Advisory's Renewables Lead, Suki, attended the 2026 Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney, joining industry leaders, policy makers, investors, First Nations representatives and clean energy professionals to explore the next phase of Australia's energy transition.

A strong theme throughout the summit was that delivering renewable energy projects is about much more than generation and transmission infrastructure. Successful projects rely on trust, strong partnerships, early and respectful engagement, meaningful benefit sharing, and a genuine commitment to the communities that host them.

Some of Suki's highlights included the Women in Renewables Lunch, which celebrated inclusive leadership and the importance of creating visible pathways for women across the sector; the First Nations session, which reinforced the need for Traditional Owners and First Nations communities to be recognised as rights-holders, partners and leaders in the transition; and a session on misinformation, which explored how transparency, credible information and respectful dialogue can help address community concerns.

Reflecting on the event, Suki's key takeaway was that social licence is not a separate workstream. It sits at the heart of project success. As the clean energy transition continues to accelerate, the way projects are planned, communicated and delivered will be just as important as the infrastructure itself.

New chapters for familiar places.

Many Hobartians will recognise 47 Liverpool Str**t as the former Tasmania Police Headquarters. Soon, the landmark building could take on a new role as housing, helping bring more people into the heart of the city.

We're pleased to have provided preliminary planning advice to Stewart Group Tasmania for the proposed redevelopment of the site into a mixed-use development, including 17 new apartments, ground-floor commercial space and on-site parking.

As cities change, existing buildings often present opportunities to deliver new uses while retaining a connection to the places and structures that have shaped our communities over time.

Located in the centre of Hobart, the project reflects a broader trend towards adapting established buildings to meet contemporary needs and support a more active, diverse and liveable city. By repurposing an existing office building for residential use, the development will contribute to housing choice while supporting ongoing activity within the CBD.

We're proud to have supported Stewart Group Tasmania through the early stages of this project and look forward to seeing its continued progression.

How can Australia deliver onshore wind projects more efficiently while continuing to protect biodiversity?

Era Advisory, in partnership with NorthBarkerEcosystemServices, recently led the Renewables Environmental Research Initiative project, Review of International Environmental Regulatory Approaches for Onshore Wind Farm Developments for Consideration in the Australian Context.

The review compares Australia's environmental approval framework with approaches used in California, Ontario, South Africa, Scotland, Germany and New Zealand. Drawing on research and insights from governments, developers, consultants and environmental non-government organisations, it explores practical regulatory measures that could make approvals clearer, more predictable and proportionate—without compromising outcomes for nature.

As Australia continues its renewable energy transition, the findings provide valuable insights into how environmental approval processes can support better outcomes for communities, industry and biodiversity.

🏖️ Coastal living, strong community connections and a landscape shaped by land and sea.

The Southern Beaches is one of Tasmania's most distinctive coastal regions, balancing growth and change with the qualities that make it such a special place to live, work and visit.

Earlier this year, we were pleased to commence work on the Southern Beaches Plan, a long-term strategic planning project that will help guide the future of Dodges Ferry, Lewisham, Carlton, Carlton River and Primrose Sands.

Now, the next phase of the project is underway, with community engagement open until 12 August 2026.

Working alongside , , Avandra Advisory and **t_udla, we're looking forward to hearing from residents, landowners, businesses and visitors about what matters most to them and their vision for the future of the Southern Beaches.

There are a range of opportunities to get involved, including community workshops, pop-up sessions and an online survey.

A small change that's helping us reduce waste in the office. ♻️

We're always looking for practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint.

Alongside our existing recycling and composting initiatives, we've recently introduced a bin to help manage items that are often difficult to recycle through standard collection systems.

From soft plastics and batteries to e-waste and other hard-to-recycle materials, it's a simple addition that makes it easier for our team to make more sustainable choices day to day.

At Era Advisory, sustainability isn't just something we support through our work with clients — it's also something we're continuing to embed in the way we operate as a business.
