Please excuse the lack of video quality with the phone zoom, but this was an impromptu encounter! This morning at Turtle Creek Ecolodge we had a number of Palm Cockatoos displaying. Hoping they are seeking out new nesting hollows in the area as Cyclone Narelle has created a new landscape.

Giant Hooded Katydid! Siliquofera grandis.

Extremely rare in Australia and endemic to Iron Range (as far as we know)!

We passed this one on the road at 80km/hr and thought it was a White-lipped tree frog as it marched down the road. I’m glad we stopped and moved it off the road.

This is our swimming hole along Turtle Creek. It’s quite special to see a Palm Cockatoo and a Blue-tailed
Monitor both using it!

This Papuan frogmouth appeared to have been hit by a car last night. It needed a bit of time out of the morning sun off the ground before regathering and itself and flying to a day time roost.

Our first major challenge was Cyclone Narelle hitting yesterday morning. Our buildings appear to have fared well however there are many trees down throughout making access impossible at the moment. The chain saws are ready for a work out!

‘Yakuma’ to local people who use it to hunt in the darkness. As aquatic life breaks the surface the Yakuma illuminates its position.
