It’s Magnificent Riflebird breeding season once again and we kick off our research for 2026 at Turtle Creek Ecolodge. Tropical Cyclone Narelle tearing through in March did significant damage to the rainforest, destroying most of the research bird’s display perches. Fortunately, they have a plethora of new perches to choose from. We have been monitoring this particular bird since 2024 and he is getting busy early this year! He has a premium perch that is getting lots of visits from females. This is going to be a particularly labour intensive season for our field team as moving through the forest, following birds has many challenges navigating through fallen trees and vines.

is a science based conservation property as well as an exclusive hideaway. Our goal is to have our community engaged and motivated by the natural history of the area to inspire its protection through land management and research.

Species in the video;
Syconycteris australis - Eastern Blossom Bat
Nyctophilus bifax - Eastern Long eared bat
Rhinolophus megaphyllus - Eastern Horsehoe Bat
Miniopterus australis - Little Bentwing Bat

The Eastern Blossom Bats are offered a nectar simulating mix to assist them mitigate any dehydration or stress from capture before being released.

Iron Range/Kutini Payamu is one of the most biodiverse rainforests in Australia and we never forget how lucky we are to live here!

Please excuse the lack of video quality with the phone zoom, but this was an impromptu encounter! This morning at Turtle Creek Ecolodge we had a number of Palm Cockatoos displaying. Hoping they are seeking out new nesting hollows in the area as Cyclone Narelle has created a new landscape.
