Just bought these AMAZING photos from the National Archives of Australia of the interior of Sundeck Hotel in Perisher in the 1960s

No offence to the current owners (as they are lovely), but a few fires, some average 80s overhauls (pre-current owners) and good old wear-and-tear, the sundeck does NOT look as stunning as this now!

Having said that: the Sundeck is still an amazing place to catch some cool live music, brilliant craft beers and cool retro hearty food, and the nostalgic vibe still lingers.

Well worth a stop for lunch or apres ski after a day in Perisher!

About 15k north of Cooma and a 5 mins drive down Chakola road is the lonely and redundant landmark of Chakola station, smack-bang in the middle of the spartan monaro plains.

An amazing part of history that hasn’t had a train from Canberra go past it in 36 years, nor a train from Cooma for the best part of ten.

Snowy mountains heritage right there for you.

One of our favourite ski lodges in Perisher is the stunning club-lodge: Tambooroora. There aren’t a whole bunch of 1960s lodges that weren’t ruined by bad 1980s/90s renovations in a series of poor attempts to modernise - but some!!

And sadly many did not survive the era due to internal fires!

On the subject of cool typography, I also love this from the door of a 1964 Nissan junior rotting out the back of a mechanics in Jindabyne. I just LOVE the H and M stack to say hotel and motel.

Took a shot of this amazing typography on the old Kosciuszko chairlift that ran from the (current) ranger’s station just north of Thredbo: to charlotte pass. It was destined for the scrap-heap, having only run a season or two. Check it out at the Thredbo museum.

Somehow I got thinking of this place today - a mid-century marvel in Thredbo designed by the genius who brought modernisms to Australia- almost but not quite single-handedly: Harry Seidler.

Found this beauty on-line the other day. The original town plan for Jindabyne! Truth is that’s pretty-much how it planned-out and resembled well in to the 1980s.

Martini is in it! On the first slide, it’s the house second right - with the two big trees.
