After opening in 1891, the early success of the Mill spurred the need for improved packing and distribution facilities. The filling of a void between the original building and the Piesse buildings next door was the logical move for the new Packing Rooms.

In here augers and the latest semi-automated bagging machines would fill the flour sacks ahead of their passage down the chute to the transport wagons below.

The chute to the transport wagons can still be seen in our hotel foyer and it is above this that our Packing Rooms are located. All of the Packing Rooms bear hallmarks to the equipment used in these rooms when the Mill was operational including exposed gantry-arms and pulley wheels. Some Packing Rooms have an interior view over the stunning central atrium with the steam boiler and others feature a lovely north-eastern aspect to capture the early morning sunrise.

The rabbit-proof fence was 1827 kilometres long when it was finished, the longest fence in the world.

In 1901, the Western Australian Government decided to fence off the whole State to protect its prized agricultural areas. It took six years, with work gangs of up to 400 men making posts from timber found along the way, digging a trench so that the distinctive hexagonal wire mesh could extend underground.

Covering 350kms over approximately 3.5hrs "The Rabbit Proof Fence and the Tin Horse Highway" tour features in our in-room Day Trips booklet, taking you on a scenic and historic drive through the likes of Lake Grace and Kulin and past features like Lake Dumbleyung and Jilakin Rock.

When the cafe is humming and the fireplace welcomes you with its warmth and glow, it's all too easy to forget to look around, or to consider turning your glance skyward.

That's why we always encourage visitors and guests to take a moment, take a breath or two and take in a glimpse of history before moving on with your day.

If you're able to do that in our foyer for example, you'll be quickly drawn back to a time where bags of flour would be sent down the chute and into a waiting horse and cart to be taken off to market.

We agree with the team at Emu Lane - it's worth celebrating that two of the finalists in the Wotif.com 'Uniquely Aussie Awards' were from Katanning!

Bringing the WA Finalist for Best Sausage Roll to the WA Finalist for Best Hotel Bar seemed like the best way to do this, so we'll be giving away a free bite-sized Emu Lane sausage roll with any drink purchased at The Cordial Bar this Saturday from doors open (3pm) until we run out!

Shenai Johnston, supported by Cordial Bar favourite Jeff Morts, are playing The Old Power Station on August 31. 🤠🎸

We could list all of her musical achievements, but you can find those anywhere. We're more excited that she was born Ongerup and now lives in Boyup Brook ... so we we sit pretty much smack bang in the middle of her two hometowns. She's a real-life 'local talent made good' story, and we can't wait to help her celebrate the release of her EP.

A new and emerging Country music artist, with a deep passion for the genre, Johnston is going to bring a lot of country energy to this acoustic show so make sure you've got your cowboy boots on and get ready for a seriously good time!
