Escape the week. Embrace the weird.

Winter Magic Festival is back, and honestly? This is the weekend to do see it properly - the parade is back, and there's a chock-a-block program to go with it!. The theme this year is *Positively Weird* — which means costumes, creativity, and proper fun.

Arrive Friday night straight from work — no stress, no fuss. Our contactless check-in means you're settled in minutes, and your room will be ready whenever you get here.

Saturday's the magic: free fireworks light up the night, followed by the Medieval Ball at The Carrington (ticketed).

But here's the thing — one night isn't enough to catch it all. Two nights lets you soak in the festival Saturday, explore the trails and attractions Sunday before heading home, and actually *feel* like you've had a proper break instead of just passing through.

Drop your bags at Blue Mountains Bag Storage as soon as you get off the train, from 9am Friday–Monday and make the most of your day while your room's being made up. Everything's sorted.

“Very cozy and quiet accommodation in Katoomba
It was such a cozy accommodation, one could immediately feel relaxed after arrival. Very well organised, from check-in procedure to kitchen equipment. I loved how there was created space in the kitchen / fridge for every room / dorm bed - so helpful! I would definitely love to come back!”

Before National Reconciliation Week begins, I challenge each of you to consider:

What would reconciliation look like if we treated it as a daily practice instead of a yearly event?

What would 365-day reconciliation actually require from us?
Not slogans. Not social media tiles. Not symbolic gestures that disappear when the week ends. But everyday choices.

Maybe it would look like:
- creating culturally safe environments every single day
- changing hiring practices instead of only changing language
- embedding Indigenous perspectives beyond NAIDOC and NRW calendars
- building relational governance, not just consultation processes
- listening deeply instead of listening defensively
- staying engaged long after the spotlight disappears
.. I could go on longer... But reconciliation was never meant to be seasonal.

It was meant to shape how we walk with one another consistently. And truthfully, people can feel the difference between organisations that engage because it’s expected… and those that engage because relationships matter. Real reconciliation asks more of us.

It asks us to:
1. remain uncomfortable long enough to grow
2. shift behaviour, not just branding
3. prioritise connection over optics
4. move from awareness into accountability
5. understand that trust is built slowly, relationally, and over time

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, this has never been a one-week conversation. So maybe, before this week begins, the question isn’t:

“What are we posting for Reconciliation Week?”

Maybe the better question is: “How are we embedding reconciliation into the way we lead, relate, employ, listen, and walk together every day of the year?”

That’s the kind of reconciliation worth building.

Source: "Every year on 26 May, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.

National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.

We cannot begin to fix the problems of the present without accepting the truth of our history. Sorry Day asks us to acknowledge the Stolen Generations, and in doing so, reminds us that historical injustice is still an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Islander families, communities, and peoples."

That says it better than we ever could.

The Blue Mountains is still very much open for business 😍

👀 The Victoria Pass closure just means there's a more scenic route to take to get to Lithgow, Hartley, Oberon etc. But most visitors? Your trip won't change at all. Katoomba... is the same. Blackheath... is the same. Megalong Valley... is the same. Mount Victoria... is the same charming village, but with some extra detour traffic. Bilpin... is the same. The famous Zig Zag railway... is the same - but now open 7 days!

😞 Mt Wilson Road being closed does mean that you are only permitted to access the area if, for example, you're lucky enough to be staying at the beautiful .estate . Otherwise, sadly, the famous garden area is closed this season for the general public. 🍂 Autumn colour CAN still be enjoyed at Mayfield Garden, Oberon; Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah; Everglades Gardens, Leura; and just walking the streets throughout the Mountains!

🚂 Travel smart: Hop on the train from Sydney and leave the fuel worries behind. Enjoy more time and store your bags at Blue Mountains Bag Storage while you explore.

🚙 Need to venture beyond public transport? Book a private transport or tour with Out of the Blue private transport & tours — they'll handle the bits out of reach (and help make the most of your time).

🏡The Mountains are waiting. Come see why No.14 Lovel St is one of the highest rated accommodation options in the Blue Mountains. Heads up: we're fully booked until 20 May, but get in now for June long weekend, Winter Magic, Yulefest / Winter getaway! 👉Whether solo, a couple, or a group of up to 20+, book your affordable getaway now

Yes! Now that 26 January is behind us for another year, it's important not to forget about the issue until next year, or wait to show your support during NAIDOC week.

does it again. This is what we need. Everyone gets their Summer January long weekend, AND we can ALL celebrate this great place we now live in TOGETHER, without the same tension every year. This doesn't fix all the problems of closing the gap, but it's a no-brainer to start. I beg you to sign the petition!

“All Australians have the power to choose whether we perpetuate the harm, or work towards repair.”

We choose to work towards repair. All year. Not just 26 January, or NAIDOC Week. We’ll make mistakes, as Annette often says ‘my heart’s in the right place even if my foot is regularly in my mouth’. Keep trying, keep learning, certainly not perfect but not performative.

We love Australia, but we can do better. We support laws that protect people from harm. There is no room for racism against any individual group within our society.

But we keep asking: where is that same urgency to address the mistreatment First Nations peoples are still experiencing? To recognise, acknowledge and correct history that we’ve been taught? Closing the Gap report out once a year - where’s the urgency on closing this gap?!

It’s not an ‘or’. It’s an ‘and’ - the same as we see our national day of celebration should be for all of US immigrants AND First Nations Peoples.
