Monday Night: Could parts of the Great Southern wake up to a dusting?
Snow in the Great Southern? Before the keyboard meteorologists start typing "Impossible!"... history would like a quiet word.
Everyone knows Bluff Knoll is WA's snow magnet, but it's not the only place that's seen the white stuff. The Porongurup Range, elevated parts of the Stirling Range, and even lower hills around the Great Southern have all reported snow or sleet during exceptional cold outbreaks. Go back to 1956 and snow was even observed far beyond the Stirling Ranges during one of WA's coldest outbreaks.
🌨️ So what's happening Monday night?
Current guidance is hinting at a fairly rare combination:
A cold front moves through during Monday.
Around 7mm of rain falls before colder air rushes in.
Temperatures tumble overnight, with model guidance showing air temperatures dropping to around -3°C over the higher inland parts of the Great Southern.
Winds ease significantly after the front, reducing the mixing that usually keeps temperatures a touch warmer.
Forecasts are even hinting at snow showers developing overnight into Tuesday morning over the highest elevations.
Your model image certainly catches the eye, showing snow icons Monday night and freezing temperatures aloft. That doesn't guarantee snow at ground level, but it does show the atmosphere will be cold enough if there's enough lingering moisture.

The highest odds remain:
❄️ Bluff Knoll
❄️ Stirling Range peaks
❄️ Porongurup Range
Outside those areas, there's a very slim chance of a brief sleet shower or a fleeting dusting on the highest hills around places like Cranbrook, Tambellup or the elevated country near the Stirlings. It would be extremely localised and would require everything to line up perfectly. Most towns, including Albany, Katanning and Kojonup, are far more likely to just experience a very cold night with cold rain or small hail.

🌾 Elsewhere across the Great Southern hills: 5%. Not impossible... just the sort of odds that make weather tragics stare at webcams until 3am while everyone else enjoys sensible hobbies.
We'll be keeping a close eye on the latest model runs over the next few days. If the cold pool deepens by even another degree or two and enough moisture hangs around after the front, the Great Southern could put on one of winter's best surprises. In Western Australia, snow outside Bluff Knoll is rare... but rare and never are two very different forecasts.
