Still such a beautiful building.

Today, on the 24th of May 1926, 100 years ago, the Leongatha Soldiers Memorial Hall was ceremonially opened as a wonderful display of Baroque-inspired architecture.

This, of course, is Leongatha’s own war memorial to the men who sacrificed their lives and, in many cases, their sanity to protect the Australian people and our way of life.

Inside, the walls were adorned with beautiful murals memorialising many of the hard-fought battles of WWI, such as Gallipoli, Sari Bair, and Cocos Island.

For many years, it has been a place where people gathered, hosting Debutante Balls, Bachelor and Spinster Balls, weddings, cattle sales, boxing matches, movies, and many other events throughout the years.

Construction took just under 365 days to complete and is truly a testament to the community and the local tradespeople of the time who contributed to the building.

More information will be shared later in the year regarding an official celebration of the Hall.

The Hall was built in memory of all those ANZACs who sacrificed their lives, but today it encompasses a larger group of those who have fought since then and continue to do so today.

36,525 days of sacrifice,
5,217 weeks of hope,
1,200 months of dreams,
& 100 years of memories.

If you are free to help these guys on 24th May, chuck on the boots and head down to the rail trail.
