I was out at Thredbo racking my brain trying to figure out what to shoot with the full moon, when it dawned on me: if I lined everything up correctly, the Kosciuszko Chairlift Top Station could sit directly in front of the setting moon.
I ran it through a few different apps to work out the best location and eventually found a spot along the Alpine Way. All I needed to do was get there before 5:40 AM.
So, I got up at 4:30, made my way out to the location, and arrived just after 5:00 AM. I spent a little time setting up with a few cameras, but the main camera for the shot was the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100–500mm.
Getting the exposure right was the tricky part. I ended up having to use exposure bracketing at +3, 0 and -3 stops just to remotely capture both the moon and the foreground without completely blowing out one or the other.
In total, I captured around 300 shots, combined the exposures into HDR images, and then stitched the sequence together into this time-lapse.
A 4:30 AM alarm, a freezing morning and a lot of planning — but I think it was worth it. 🌕🏔️
