Thursday fencing. Wet underfoot but not raining so happy workers.
Back to the property out of Birdwood where posts had been inserted after our group had rolled up the fence on Tuesday.
The fence was finished in the day.
The highlight might have been finger buns brought by a volunteer who had sutures out in Mt. Barker and arrived just prior to smoko (excellent timing) but upstaged mid-bight by a visit from Stewart with delicious Lobethal Bakery treats.
He was in Birdwood to pick up the bagged chook poo which is always for sale at the Mt. P. end of the town. Volunteers were very happy to see him and Stewart stayed for smoko.

Fencing on Tuesday at two locations, both where work has been done previously. One is to replace the boundary fence of around 400m and the other is to build a brand new fence from scratch to reduce the size of a farm house yard. Luckily for us that the grass was wet it was not raining, unlike today, Wednesday. It is forecast to be dry tomorrow - lucky as we'll be out to hang the mesh and the barbs on the first property. A very large team so there was plenty of standing around but it will be a job for everyone tomorrow.

Thursday woodcutting/clearing a winter creek line. Several trees had been felled on Tuesday so today was spent cutting them into lengths to be taken away, cutting the tiny saplings, cutting the stumps & immediately painting them with poison to prevent regrowth and taking away the leafy canopy material to big piles for later burning. A most satisfactory day - one photo shows a park-like place instead of dense regrowth.

Tuesday. A short rainy morning but our teams were hard at work. One team of three chaps went out to Lou's to split over two tonnes of wood most of which had been cut last year at fencing time. They even stacked it for her which was an unexpected bonus.
Team B was out at Cromer felling saplings that had self-seed some time ago along a dry winter creek. Only a short section achieved but it looks amazing and another section will be tackled on Thursday.
And a mighty huge thank you to Lynn, Michael & John who diagnosed then sorted a blown brake-light fuse on Lou's ute which had happened on the way back from Cromer towing the splitter. The vehicle could not be put into reverse to store the trailer in Shed 26 but Lynn diagnosed the problem straight away & it was quickly sorted.

Early today the rain has cleared, it is not too cold so why not come along. More details on the Woodside Market fb page.

Thursday - more woodcutting. A trojan effort by all & an amazing amount of wood cut and split. Lots of trailers loaded & the Rotary ute delivered a couple as well. A fencer who hasn't been for a while turned up at smoko with delicous edibles. An excellent day's work.

Some videos will be loaded separately when the operator learns how to do it.

Tuesday our fencers were out for a day cutting. splitting & loading wood. The wood is from trees burnt in the Cudlee Creek fires, so nicely seasoned at six years. The land holder is keen for us to cut the piles. Ute loads of wood were delivered to various households in the district before fencers filled a few trailers for themselves, friends or family.
If anyone complains about the cost of retail fire wood think about this: it is handled at least six times just to get it into a trailer or back of the ute. It has to then be unloaded, stacked & finally brought inside to the fire.

Tuesday & Thursday fencing was on the property of one of our fencers. The couple has lived there for forty years and there are lots of interesting mature trees along with swathes of Periwinkle thriving in the shade and leaf mould, a few blackberries, wild roses and saplings.
On Tuesday a very large Melaleuca was felled along with cutting back overhanging foliage. Work began on installing a new strainer and taking out the old posts and pickets.
On Thursday the other fenceline strainer was removed and a new hole dug and strainer inserted. If this sounds simple it is not! The old strainer had been concreted into place and that had to be broken up. The holes were dug by two people holding the digging machine, another was on hands and knees empting dirt and a third used the double-bladed shovel.
Both fence runs were completed with five strands of plain wire (no stock) before the landholder gave everyone a peek into his man's shed full of treasures, works in progress and dreams of what might be.
The owners are absolutely thrilled with the work. They now have to cut the cut greenery into smaller pieces and feed it through the mulcher.

Fencing on Thursday. The CFS access gate was finished by tying the fence either side to the new strainers & cutting out the piece covering the gate, two blokes adjusted a gate's catch that had become too tight after post movement as it was on the way to the CFS job. Then it was time for smoko on the other side of a quiet country road before heading in to the Birdwood Soccer Club. Neal had already rammed in the posts at the goal ends of the pitch. Planks were put up for sponsor advertisements and mesh was put up to stop wayward balls from running away when a goal kick did not hit the net. A lovely afternoon's work on a warmer than average autumn day - but hoping for rain this weekend.
