Once the female has laid her eggs, Dad takes over. Male Southern Cassowaries incubate the eggs for around 50 days, then protect and guide the chicks until they’re old enough to become independent.

These incredible birds are regular visitors to the property, particularly when the fruit trees are dropping their fruit. If you’re lucky enough to spot a family like this, the best thing to do is simply give them plenty of space and enjoy the moment from a distance.
