If you live in Gnarabup or Prevelly you probably need to have a good hard look at this pic 🧐. Particularly on the 12 year anniversary of the devastating fire that impacted this area in 2011.
It's a fire modelling scenario of a mock incident at Gas Bay.
The Wallcliffe Incident Management team undertook a very realistic training exercise last week, to test our preparedness for a rapidly developing incident.
The mock scenario was a small grass fire started by a car parking on dry grass verge at 1130am. A warm day and moderate winds was the data we fed into the simulated fire model. The initial outcome was moderate fire behaviour for the first ten minutes. Before the first fire trucks arrived from Wallcliffe Station. The scenario assumed hundreds of cars parked from Gas Bay to Riflebutts with thousands of people at the beach and at homes.
The data modelling showed a small fire that escalated very quickly into the surrounding coastal heath.
The emergency response was significant with all DFES,DBCA and AMR Shire Brigades activated. Air Support from Busselton. Police, Ambulance and SES.
As every minute ticked by the situation got progressively worse with impact deep into the community of Gnarabup within 20 minutes. Ember attack igniting multiple houses (very similar to the 2011 Fires). The data modelling showed within another 20 minutes the area was completely surrounded by fire, with rapid progress up the ridge toward the Wilderness subdivision.
In just over an hour the modelling predicted Prevelly was impacted. So quick. Remember this is 'moderate' conditions. It would happen significantly faster in windier and hotter conditions.
It was a sobering exercise. The team performed incredibly well under multiple rapidly developing incidents. The training highlighted there is some remarkably talented and experienced people within the IMT, but even the best team and best fire fighting resources couldn't prevent this scale of fire impacting the local community once it got going after the first 20 minutes.
So what is the lesson we'd like the community to take away from this exercise? Firstly to fully appreciate the reality of living in the bush in the Wallcliffe district. Bushfire is inevitable. It will happen.
Secondly, the question you need to ask yourself is how prepared is your family and your property to be impacted by fire? You may only have ten minutes warning before ember attack or flames. You will need to enact your Bushfire Plan. This could very well be the summer you are impacted by Bushfire. Take 15 minutes to develop your plan. And if you've already done it, take 15 minutes to practice it with your family.
