The most memorable experiences in life are those that shift perspectives. It’s why the first place Sean Blocksidge takes his wine touring guests is canoeing on Wooditchup Bilya — the Margaret River.

“Margaret River wine is the confluence of a whole range of different things that are going on: It’s geology, it’s ecology, it’s climate,” muses Sean, speaking as a 20-year Margaret River local who’s spent almost as much time canoeing the river and trekking the capes as he has drinking the wine.

It’s through this lens that Sean showcases the region’s wine, on a very small and personalised gourmet/eco 4WD experience. You’ll be having so much fun that it’s not until the end that you’ll notice you’re on your way to becoming a wine expert.

400 years ago a trading vessel belonging to the Dutch East India Company was blown off course en-route to Indonesia making a chance encounter with the south west tip of Australia. 🌬

That vessel was named Leeuwin (Dutch for “Lioness”) and it would serve as the European name for this mighty headland during the years to come when it began to appear on increasingly detailed nautical charts of this great southern land we now call home. 🦘

Now host to the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the Cape is a must-see attraction of The Margaret River Region and today the Dutch ambassador to Australia, Marion Derckx, has unveiled a plaque recognising the great milestone centuries ago. ⚜️

To get your fix of Australian maritime history and learn about one of the most significant events in the charting of the worlds oceans take a visit to "The End of the Road" (or rather "The Beginning" as caretaker Paul Sofilas says), check the link below for full details 🔗

Is this the most iconic road in Western Australia? We're just going to go ahead and say yes.. 👌

Caves Road is your route through the heart of the Margaret River Region and its biggest drawcards. From 5-star wineries (the most out of any wine region in Aus) to 5-star restaurants, art galleries, hobby farms, towering karri forests and caves, this scenic drive will delight the entire family if you're needing to please a crowd. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Starting in Yallingup (as captured here by 📸 .stories via IG) and winding its way through the rolling greenery of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge all the way to Hamelin Bay the drive takes around an hour to complete, although with the amount of entertainment and indulgence on offer along the way it's pretty much always a full day affair 😄

Six months after the Boranup bushfire, it's such a relief to see the karri forest regenerating 💚🌿

You'll notice that many of the towering trees are pushing out an unusual kind of lush new growth as they recover from the bushfire. It's called epicormic growth, and it's a kind of 'emergency' growth that emerges from buds on the trunks themselves, rather than the burnt branches higher up. It allows the trees to recommence photosynthesising ASAP, producing much-needed energy for a speedy recovery.

When exploring any fire-affected areas, please stick to the tracks to help the bush regenerate. Better still, book a guided experience with one of the amazing operators who know and love the forest ~ you'll be amazed how much more there is to discover with a local!

The mesmerising coastline of Hamelin Bay holds more than just beauty on the surface. The history of this seaside settlement runs deep below the waves ⚓️

Hamelin Bay is located in the southern half of The Margaret River Region near Augusta, and is home to a staggering 12 shipwrecks! 😮

These days with advanced GPS and plotter systems, recreational boaters use the bay as their summer playground. The dynamic reef systems and stunning biodiversity provide a natural wonderland 🐠 🦀 🐬

However during the late 1800s and early 1900s Hamelin Bay was notorious for wrecking vessels caught out in bad weather. The remains of the old timber milling service jetty poking out of the water serve as a reminder of the industry this location once served, and we can learn about the stories from the information displays along the foreshore. 🤓

Hamelin Bay is best enjoyed with a simple stroll along the beautiful beach at the base of the limestone cliffs (photographed here by 📷 Merr Watson ), or a short hike along the walk trail to the top of the headland where you'll experience stunning views of Hamelin Island and the dramatic coastline running north and south.

Make a day of it, or even a few staying at Hamelin Bay Holiday Park, this secluded section of the south west is a one stop shop for adventure. 🏕

They say perfection takes time and the forces creating Canal Rocks certainly weren't in a hurry! Luckily, after thousands of years of the Indian Ocean carving away this section of the Margaret River Region coastline we've ended up with one of the most unique rock formations on the west coast of Western Australia 😍

The Canal Rocks boardwalk photographed here by 📷 k3llymckinlay provides spectacular views of the adjacent coastline running north towards Smith's Beach and Yallingup along with a safe place for visitors to witness the power of the sea as it washes in through the natural channels. 🌊

Aside from the incredible natural beauty of this place, folks will find perfect fishing platforms, stunning picnic spots and of course plenty of calm water on the protected side for snorkelling. 🤿

A note for your safety: While Canal Rocks is an alluring place it is also an un-patrolled section of coastline. Please exercise caution and remember that conditions can be unpredictable.

Summer days are made for exploring Australia's South West 💙 Just 30 min south of The Margaret River Region you will uncover a coastal haven known as Hamelin Bay, renowned for its sparkling blue water and friendly resident rays. The wild Eagle Rays that call the sanctuary zone home are a protected species so remember to look but don’t touch. Make the most of your time in the South West and spend your days snorkelling and swimming, or adventure out and see the Margaret River Sculpture Park, Jewel Cave or hop aboard Augusta River Tours.
