Notice of Marion Bay Scheduled Prescribed Burn

Between March and April a prescribed burn is planned to take place on the west side of Marion Bay. The scheduled day is dependent on weather conditions.

The purpose of this burn was triggered by concerns raised by residents. Our aim is to create a fuel reduced area to limit the spread and impact of bushfire toward Marion Bay from the west. Fuel loads in the area are currently classed as very high to extreme.

Fantastic news.

Fantastic news.

Heard a haunting, high-pitched sound at night on the peninsula lately?

Then there’s a good chance it was the call of a bush stone-curlew, a critically-endangered species on southern Yorke Peninsula that hadn’t been seen in this area for about 40 years.

Five years ago, one of our monitoring cameras snapped this photo and there have been other encouraging reports recently.

Like the visitor to Innes National Park who spotted one in their car headlights and the landholder who mentioned that he’d heard a strange-sounding owl at night.

And then our landscape ecologist Grace Hodder was sitting on one of the porches at Inneston in November last year and two bush stone-curlews casually walked by!

Ground-dwelling birds, they are particularly vulnerable to feral predators, so it's likely that the 12-year fox baiting program on the peninsula (which is continuing thanks to the Great Southern Ark project) is making a difference.

Please let us know if you see (or hear) a bush stone-curlew on Yorke Peninsula. You can call the Northern and Yorke Natural Resources Centre in Clare on 8841 3400 or email us via [email protected]
