We just got our annual soil tests back from our two “worst” blocks here at Inkwell.

When we started our regenerative farming journey in 2019 these were the two blocks that caused us the most problems but we didn’t systematically measure soil carbon until 2022.

The first spreadsheet below tells the story of how far we’ve come just since 2022 while the second spreadsheet shows the compound growth rate of soil carbon since we started on the property in 2003.

In layman’s terms, soil carbon above 2.5% means pretty healthy soil. Most of our soils were far below that despite being organic.

In total terms, we have sequestered over 41 tonnes of carbon out of the atmosphere and stored it in a bit more than four acres of vineyard in just two years - or, about 10 tonnes of carbon per acre per year (this is just in the top four inches measured btw) following all the regenerative farm principles but without grazing animals.

This is so much faster and easier than we anticipated and gives us great hope that mobilising more farmers to follow this path can help reverse climate change while becoming more resilient and growing better, healthier crops.
