A huge thank you to Urban List for including Cedar Cottage Meander in its Urban List 100: Spotlighting The Local Legends Shaping Aussie Culture In 2026. 🔥

“We’re proud to introduce the inaugural Urban List 100, presented by Uber One Exclusive Tables—a cultural index championing the shapers defining what’s new, the voices influencing what’s next, and the people and ideas driving our cities forward.

Culture in Australia isn’t led by the loudest names or the biggest platforms. It’s shaped quietly, locally, and often without recognition. At Urban List, we’re all about backing real human stories with lasting impact—the quiet achievers showing true grit, gusto and creativity who are propelling culture forward in 2026.”

It comes as a complete surprise and is a real honour.

Wild swimming isn’t just a winter thing.

Just minutes away and with spectacular views of World Heritage wilderness, Huntsman Lake sits cradled by high dolerite mountains and lush native forests.

It’s a top spot to cool down in summer. The fly fishing is decent too, with lots of tributaries and inflow from Meander River headwaters.

See if you can spot a white-bellied sea eagle amongst the local mountain currawongs and black cockatoos.

As the Tasmanian Craft Fair — the largest display of working arts and crafts in the Southern Hemisphere — wraps up in nearby Deloraine, let’s look at some of our talented local artists.

We’re fortunate that many skilled creatives have called this area home. Artists and musicians seem drawn to our phenomenal natural environment, diverse communities, and spectacular landscapes of kooparoona niara / Great Western Tiers.

We have two exquisitely stitched artworks hanging in the cottage.

Sewn freestyle, they depict temperate rainforest growing nearby. Silk and cotton thread, often hand dyed from leaves and bark, is used to sew the texture of moss, roots and foliage.

These artworks are part of the 5000 Trees Project created by award-winning Tasmanian textile artist Cindy Watkins, whose work is informed by native trees, local wilderness and wild places.

Late leather artist Garry Greenwood, late legendary loom-master Jim Deghand and renowned painter Tony Smibert AM are all artists that, like Cindy, chose this beautiful part of Tasmania to call home.

All rose to international acclaim from the leafy depths of this quiet corner of Tassie, with artwork in the National Gallery of Australia and in public and private collections around the world.

Veg Mahal is responding happily to the warmth with raspberries, heritage thornless blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, and red and black currants busily producing new growth for a summer berry bounty.

Pull up a chair on the verandah and enjoy fresh organic berries with pancakes as the forest birds sing and bees, languid and laden with pollen, drone lazily by.

🫐 🥞 🍓

Pick your own berries or graze directly from the garden.

Nothing beats a perfectly plump strawberry sweetened by sunshine.

Sunset gazing and forest bathing. Dark skies unlocked.

Will the aurora steal the show?

If you're lucky, you might glimpse the celestial magic of the southern lights from the best seat in town.

In Memoriam

Moya Costello
1952 – 2025 🌸

Moya has been an integral part of Cedar Cottage Meander since its inception and my beloved other mother for 46 years.

A gifted Australian writer and academic, Moya left this world a kinder, more beautiful place.

It was her gentle and patient presence that nurtured the clematis that curls around the verandah; its fine ballet-slipper pink blossoms as delicate as her prose, its endurance through harsh winters a testament to her strength.

Fragility and fortitude, coexisting and fundamental, impermanent always.

These interrelationships are mutual and abiding.

And like the world, I am left better for her being.

A flame robin perches on an old lilac bush.

Welcome swallows return from their northernly sojourn to refurbish their feather and daub nests under the eaves of the verandah. These nests are multi-generational and ancient in bird time.𓅪

They will raise their babies to fledge from the porch beams as juveniles before undertaking the same migration north.

Superb fairy-wrens flit and chitter about the garden, excited by the hatching insects, the promise of full bellies and the activities of courtship, their azure plumage vivid in the spring sunshine.

Spring, with her moss pile carpets, mellow light and gilded accoutrements of wattle, jonquil and daffodil, has arrived. 🌼

The westerly winds follow, whipping through the valley, tousling the messy mop tops of native trees and breathily kissing the budding florets of deciduous foliage.

It’s a beautiful time of year at the cottage. We wish you were here.
