We’re a little late but, but better late than never! Last month our Brisbane team celebrated Halloween and the costumes were even better than the previous year! (If that’s even possible?). It’s wonderful to see staff creativity come to life, from wigs to guitars to giant cardboard sandwiches, the office was transformed into theatre. It’s hard to pick, but what’s your favourite?

The presence of Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) in the workplace is not only an important OH&S issue, but a human health issue in many industrial workplaces. RCS found in sand, stone, concrete and mortar has proven to be extremely dangerous to human health and increasingly harmful. When stone products containing crystalline silica are cut, crushed, drilled, polished, ground and processed, toxic dust particles can be breathed in and lodge deep into the lungs causing dire health complications.

Next week we’ll be attending the AIOH Conference in Melbourne where our expert RCS Analysis Team from Perth will be in attendance. Kim Rodgers and Rhys Thomas from our WA laboratory will be available to answer questions about RCS testing using the latest, fastest instrumentation.

Asbestos, known as a carcinogen, is still present in many workplaces today. Exposure to all types of airborne asbestos fibres is hazardous to human health so it’s important that work spaces are tested to keep employees safe. Our state-of-the-art laboratories located in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Perth and Auckland are accredited to carry out asbestos testing, identification and additional services to support a range of asbestos testing requirements. They accept samples from anywhere across Australia and New Zealand.

We are excited to be part of the AIOH - Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists Annual Scientific Conference & Exhibition this December, so be sure to visit our stand and find out more about our asbestos testing capabilities.

Congratulations to Ibrahim Hakeem from RMIT University for winning the Student Water Prize at the Australian Water Association Victorian awards last week. The prize was awarded in recognition of his work in Heavy Metals Recovery and Biochar Production from Biosolids via Integrated Mild Acid Pre-treatment and Pyrolysis Processes. Ibrahim has recently completed his PhD and his work focused on developing integrated chemical-thermal process for the conversion of biosolids to high-quality biochar.

Thank you to AWA for a fabulous event and for the wonderful opportunity to recognise the inspiring leadership and innovating research, programs and infrastructure projects. We are so proud of sponsoring events supporting the professionals of the future in our industry.

Last week we proudly sponsored the ALGA Sustainability Symposium in Auckland. With various presentations around the theme ‘From extreme weather events to a sustainable future – How should contaminated land be managed in a changing climate?’, the Symposium aimed to give a clear representation of how to match our limited resources with our long-term priorities.

It was a fantastic opportunity for industry professionals to come together and address up-and-coming topics. Thank you to ALGA for hosting the insightful event.

Last week some of our Newcastle team had the pleasure of taking part the ALGA Newcastle Geology Walking Tour. Joining Geologists Phil and Cressida Gilmore, the team walked 5km from Nobbys Beach to the Bogey Hole.

The tour gave participants the chance to explore the rocks that tell ancient stories along with experiencing how geological history has shaped human history in the Newcastle region. There was also the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how the Sydney Basin was formed and the transport of contaminants into the ground.

Organotins, used in a range of industrial and agricultural applications including antifouling paints, wood preservatives and plastics production (specifically PVC), have the potential to be highly toxic to aquatic life, posing severe risks to marine and human health. By combining the principles of organic and metal chemistry, our team has developed a rapid method for the speciation of Organotins. Our method is ISO17025 accredited, and the Limits of Reporting (LORs) vary per matrix and analyte but are according to the relevant guidelines within Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
