Not much happening here at millbrook - very slim picking condering we are in the peak of summer.

Not looking like we will have much surplus fresh produce this season unfortunately - definitely alot less tomato flowers this year.

I hope everyone’s growing their own heirloom tomatoes 🙂

Farm stand is closed unless advertised.

6’ tall plants but not much fruit, it’s a strange season. We literally have had 5 ripe tomatoes so far! Cool nights aren’t helping them ripen.
Just 8 degrees this morning.

Still battling the silver eye birds in the fruit orchard. Picking a few paradise pears 🍐 very sweet small cocktail pear also known as sugar pears 🍐

Finally the first ripe tomato - Juanne flamme turning orange (yes orange and high in betacaratone).

Very slow to ripen this year, I think the nights have been too cool.

It’s going to be a late tomato season, so no tomatoes until next month.

The birds are in the orchard, sadly getting the ripest fruits, plums, apricots, peaches, the breba figs and now starting on the green apples! 🍎 No surplus fruits at the moment.
UPDATE WE HAVE GOT 6 birds out and covered the netting up again 🙂

Early morning pick today as the heirloom vegetables are just starting to ripen
🥗🥒🍅🥬🍑🌱

The early variety heirloom tomatoes should be ripe in a couple weeks. They are getting quite tall, about a metre high and tied up to a wire by string which works well.

Cocozelle zucchinis are growing fast! Soft skin and very tasty.

Farm stand will be open when advertised on Saturday’s from later next month, when we have surplus produce.

‘Heirloom vegetables’ are traditional, open-pollinated plant varieties passed down through generations, known for their unique flavors, diverse colors, and interesting shapes, unlike modern hybrids developed for industrial farming (supermarket tomatoes).

They're valued by gardeners for preserving genetic diversity, connecting with food history, and offering superior taste and nutrition, with seeds saved and shared over time to "breed true" (produce identical offspring).

Grow local - eat seasonally 🌻

Farm stand will be open from mid January when advertised most Saturdays 🧄🍅🥒🍋

It’s been a busy few months getting all the heirloom vegetables planted and the orchard bird proof AND fox proof.

We grow for ourselves but have excess produce during the peak summer season.

Our fresh produce tastes amazing but it’s alot of work, thats why we took a few years off. We are very small scale now.

Here are the best varieties we have found, that we have planted (from seed).

Heirloom tomatoes 25+ plants (not 500 plants anymore).
Heirloom pumpkins - buttercup - beautiful orange flesh
Heirloom zucchini- cocozelle and chilacyote
Heirloom beetroot - bulls blood
Heirloom cucumbers - sweet and striped
Heirloom lettuces - baby cos
Heirloom rockmelons - french charentais
Heirloom watermelon - sugar baby
Large purple GARLIC (not 10,000 garlic anymore).

50+ heritage fruit trees - apricots, peaches, plums, figs, apples, pears plus more….

All our excess fresh produce will be advertised ‘when available’ from the farm stand, most saturday mornings during summer.

We are closed every other day.

Peak season is late January and February.

We grow organically but are not certified.

With over 50 different heritage fruit trees in the orchard, we have added some new fig tree varieties recently.

Some late cuttings taken are just starting to grow. Surplus fig trees will be advertised after summer.

The heritage fig tree cuttings:

🌳Brown turkey - huge 5mx 5m tree
🌳Black Genoa
🌳Blue province
🌳White Adriatic
🌳Panache
🌳Black marvel (local to king river)
🌳St Dominique purple

Local to our area is the king river black marvel (most amazing tasting fig I’m told, thanks to a friend).

Everyone should have a fig tree in their back yard. Can be kept in a pot or pruned to 2m, or let it grow massive so the birds get the top ones and you pick the bottom ones 🙂

Will start grafting the reed and sharwill seedling avocados this summer, to add to the avocado orchard 🥑

Heirloom tomatoes & heritage stone fruit will be available from January. Will advertise then 🍅 🍑

Last year the parrots got into the orchard and ate everything!
Looking to be a fabulous fruit season - early apricots, peaches, old variety Jonathon apples, pears, figs, plums.
Huge loaded English mulberry tree if anyone makes jam.
I’ll advertise any surplus fresh produce January to April, citrus in July.
