Green and loggerhead turtles, gentle giant manta rays, docile grey nurse sharks, migrating humpback whales, dolphins and more call the Southern Great Barrier Reef region home during the cooler season.

It's World Turtle Day, and did you know...? 🐢🤔

1. They’ve been around forever 🦕
Marine turtles have existed for over 100 million years – they swam alongside dinosaurs.

2. They travel entire oceans 🗺️
Some species migrate thousands of kilometres, crossing oceans between feeding and nesting grounds.

3. They always find their way home 🤯
Female turtles return to the exact beach they were born on to lay their eggs.

4. Temperature decides their s*x 🌡️
Warmer sand = more females, cooler sand = more males. Nature’s own thermostat.

5. Only a few make it 🐢
Out of 1000 hatchlings, just one or two will survive to adulthood, making every nesting site incredibly important to protect.
