Each June, the onset of the cold Antarctic air initiates the migration of the majestic and mysterious Mt Buller Snow Whale. 🐋

It is a special time of year as Mt Buller welcomes these gentle giants — and there are some massive ones on the mountains this year — possibly the largest snow whales in Australia. Here you can see IG and doggo in front of one for scale.

While the whales initially congregate on Bourke St, they will eventually migrate to other areas thanks to the nutrition provided by 290 snow guns and 2 all-weather Snow Factories. The food supply has seen a huge boost recently with the addition of a 100ML reservoir at the top of Boggy Creek. You can be rest assured our team of whale handlers will be working hard to assist the whales ahead of opening for regional Victorians and interstate guests on 12 June, and hopefully Melbournians soon after. 🤞

These huge but delicate creatures are beautiful to admire, but if you’re on the mountain this week please avoid touching them (AKA don’t go on the snowmaking piles!)

Please note while snow whales are welcome on the mountain, dogs are only allowed with a permit for residents.
