Below is a recent review from Karen who was happy for us to share here review for other travellers. Karen normally lives in specialist disability accommodation (SDA). In regards to Karen's comment on the bed remote please note Karen did mention to me in a private email that she does have limited strengths in her hands and that it may not be an issue for everyone.
"Really enjoyed my stay at the Mount Gambier apartment - the location on the city edge was perfect. If the weather had been kinder, we would have walked into the city centre. It was fabulous to be able to have the mobile hoist and commode available for use, along with an electric adjustable bed. The only issue I had was that the bed remote control was a bit difficult with the buttons needing a firm press. This meant that I had to call my support worker in to reposition me. Here’s some wheelchair friendly suggested activities - the visitor information centre did offer some suggestions, but we did waste time visiting Hell’s Hole which was not doable at all in a standard power wheelchair. Highly recommend a visit to Tantanoola Cave - one of the few wheelchair friendly caves in the world. We rolled up the hill to the Centenary Tower on the top of Mount Gambier - it was the limits of what my power wheelchair could achieve, but so exhilarating and the views were amazing. The Little Blue Lake was a surprise - although it lacked accessible pathways, you could get a good view and it was well worth a visit. The Limestone Coast Pantry was good value with delicious food - not great pathways to enter, but the venue was step free. We picked up a delicious Chinese takeaway from the Golden Chopsticks. Lots of op shops to visit with good access. We did intend to visit the aquatic centre and use the hydrotherapy pool (there is a change room with hoist), but didn’t have enough time. There is also a Changing Places toilet in the city centre. We grabbed a coffee from the servo on Bay Road on more than one occasion and drove up to the car park on Davidson Drive with a view of the Blue Lake. We didn’t roll around the lake pathway due to the poor weather, but it looked like it was a smooth path all the way around, however in parts it appeared to be very steep. The Valley Lake Conservation Park was wheelchair friendly - we didn’t stay long there as it wasn’t as interesting as other places I have visited. We also visited Penola and stumbled upon Pettycoat Lane which was an interesting walk with old cottages. We ran out of time to do the Craitbul and Volcano – free film screenings at the Riddoch Arts Culture Centre. Highly recommend a visit to Mount Gambier and staying at City Edge Apartments. Allow at least 6 days - we ran out of time and missed a few opportunities."
