Mount Victoria is the westernmost village in the Blue Mountains, (also its highest at an altitude of 1,064 metres) and is brimming with historic charm and n

atural attractions. Here you can go bushwalking, rock climbing, bird watching or simply visit our charming village without the tourist crowd. Come and see for yourself what it’s like to step out of the fast lane and enjoy a historic mountains cottage escape and indulge in all that the famous Blue Mountains has to offer. The area had been occupied by the Dharug and Gundungurra Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Mount Victoria was originally a stockade for convict chain gangs, and later an important staging post for Cobb & Co coaches, the town became known as Mount Victoria in the 1860s when the railway came to town.

History Lives in Mount Victoria

MOUNT VICTORIA TOLL HOUSE

For over 170 years this small, stone building has welcomed travellers to our town. Situated on Mt Victoria’s eastern outskirts, it is the second oldest surviving building on the Blue Mountains. It is also one of only two remaining toll houses in New South Wales. Initially called the Broughton’s Waterhole Toll Bar, it became operational on the first day of 1849.

The Toll House cottage is a modest, two-roomed, sandstone building, originally with a shingled roof. A distinguishing feature of the building is its three-sided bay entrance, comprising a door and two side windows. From the shelter of his residence the toll collector had a clear view of the road in both directions. Road tolls were collected at Mt Victoria until 1876.
