There is nothing to do in Murwillumbah EXCEPT.
At the guesthouse you can sit back relax and enjoy the Goldilocks weather, watch the sunset behind the amazing scenic mountains, bird watch and fish watch.
At the swimming complex swim laps, exercise in the heated therapy pool and dive from the diving board.
In town view the Art-deco buildings, sip coffee at cafes, visit quirky stores, buy clothing at the many female outlets some going back in time, see a variety of arts at M'arts, watch movies at the cinema, visit the highly rated museum, cycle the rail trail.
Further afield (3km.) drop into the famous Margaret Ollie Art Gallery.
With a car enjoy rain-forest, waterfalls and natural rock-pools.

Murwillumbah the Ghost town.
On the 26th December Australians pack their car and drive to a beach holiday destination.
The tourist destinations are lovely but with so many visitors the roads are packed, car parking spots are as rare as hens teeth, and you have to stand in line at the shops and restaurants.
Murwillumbah is the opposite, we’re in the country so our residents also flock to the beach. Lots of businesses close for the holidays, and Murwillumbah becomes a ghost town. It’s lovely. The roads are subdued, finding a car park is easy but there is still plenty to do away from the maddening crowds. The scenery is spectacular from the guesthouse. I’ll list other things to do in a few days. If you wish to have a different holiday experience, the Murwillumbah Guesthouse has 6 rooms that can be single or doubles, at $60 for a single or $100 double.
We also have a group or family room for up to 8 people $180 for 3 people and $45 for each additional person. We have a few holiday vacancies, for more information phone 0409221385 7am to noon.

Now that I have postponed my retirement people have commented that they wish to visit before I close. Some people were here in the 80s and wish to relive there previous journey. In the 80s we were packed with young English and European travelers who loved to party. I need to inform you that things have changed. At the beginning of covid the Mt Warning / Wollumbin was closed and has not reopened so we no longer have young international tourists. We have more mature quieter visitors who come to admire the variety of sunsets and relax at the guesthouse. The nearby council swimming pool is popular and the various art galleries and quirky stores are popular.

On the 1st of October 1980 I opened the Murwillumbah Youth Hostel. A couple of decades later we were named Murwillumbah YHA. Then recently YHA released associate hostels from the franchise arrangement and we became the Murwillumbah Guesthouse. Today I have the privilege of being the manager for 45 years. That is 45 years of admiring the spectacular scenery from the home. I was planning to retire and close the the guesthouse tomorrow but unexpected circumstances has me delaying retirement, so the guesthouse is still operating for a little while longer. A highlight is the wonderful guests from all over the world who have visited us, it has been 45 years of fun. Thank you all.

Mount Warning/ Wollumbin was the main draw-card for travelers to visit Murwillumbah and Murwillumbah Guest House but with the walk closed we are getting fewer traditional travelers and holiday makers. Thankfully we are still getting a few guests to keep us ticking over. We have people who are here for a variety of reasons, temporarily working in the area, others who are here between house sitting jobs, others riding the rail trail and some who are here to visit family. Guests are of traditional ages, young people having adventures before settling into careers and family life and those who are having freedom after family and responsibility has completed. It's great to see young people and seniors living in such harmony.

We have had the privilege of being an associate hostel with the Youth Hostel association since 1980, 44.5 years. However from the 1st April 2025 we will no longer be attached to the organization. So YHA has been dropped from our name. Things will continue the same but we will have to do our own marketing. To make inquiries on price and availability phone 0409221385, mornings are the best time to phone me. Thank you YHA for our association. I have many happy memories and many lifelong friends.
