What is it about a smoky fire that draws us in? 🔥

Every time we light the fire pit on a cold, cloudy day, people seem to gravitate towards it.

Maybe it’s the warmth — although half the people standing around it aren’t actually close enough to feel much! Maybe it’s something older and more instinctive than that.

For thousands of years, fire has meant warmth, food, light, safety and company. There’s just something comforting about standing around a fire, watching the flames and sharing a yarn.

Whatever the reason, the Brookfield fire pit is doing its thing this weekend!

Come find a spot around the fire, grab a coffee or something tasty from the café and enjoy a wintery day at the Maze.

The roads are open, the sun is shining… and all Rocky Roads lead to the Maze! 😄

Monday Beyond the Maze — Ned Kelly

As a South African who came to Australia later in life, I’ve never quite understood the celebration of Ned Kelly as a national hero.

Whatever injustices he and his family may have experienced, Ned became a thief, a bank robber and ultimately a killer. That is difficult for me to turn into heroism.

But after spending some time at the Ned Kelly Discovery Hub in Glenrowan, I came away with a little more understanding of how his story began.

Ned grew up in a large, struggling family, lost his father while still young and fell into trouble early. At some point he was mentored by the notorious bushranger Harry Power (Powers Lookout) so not exactly the influence a troubled teenager needed.

None of that excuses what followed, but it does add context.

What surprised us while standing over the large relief map in the centre of the Discovery Hub, was to find Brookfield Maze sitting almost in the centre of Kelly country, close to Fifteen Mile Creek and among the same hills, valleys and bushland that shaped the story.

I’m still not ready to call Ned Kelly a hero. To me, he was a complicated product of a hard upbringing, bad influences, genuine grievances and increasingly serious choices.

But perhaps Australians see him differently.

Our regular Monday adventures are 'hard' work… but someone has to do it.😁

Today’s mission took us along Fifteen Mile Creek Road to Tolmie, then on to Mansfield for a magnificent breakfast at Mansfield Coffee Merchant. With the coffee fix sorted and a wander through this picturesque little town (very busy at this time of year!) we headed for Powers Lookout.

My word, what a sight!

On a clear day you can see four or five snow-covered peaks, with the most beautiful green valley stretching out below. Absolutely well worth a visit.

Then it was back on the road, winding down into Whitfield for lunch at Hobbledehoy cafe.

Honestly, what a place we live in. Can’t wait to see where next Monday takes us!

⚡ We’ve joined the EV era! ⚡

With more visitors and guesthouse guests arriving in electric vehicles, we’ve installed a new 22kW EV charger with T2 plug at Brookfield Maze.

Charging options are few and far between around the King Valley, and we thought it was time to get with the times. We’re still working out exactly how we’ll offer charging long-term, but for now, just ask us at the counter and we’ll get you set up.
It’s shaping up to be a beautiful sunny winter weekend, so come out for a wander through the maze, enjoy a coffee and top up the car while you’re here.

One of the benefits of running the maze on weekends and holidays is that Monday becomes our day off.

So, today, while the rain was sifting down gently, we went walkabout and found our way back to Paradise Falls. We haven't been in a while and after all the rain, we knew it would be running strong. And what a sight it was!

Two strong streams of water were free-falling into the creek below, flanked by the misty hills of the King Valley.

Days like this remind us just how fortunate we are to live here. There is always another beautiful back road to travel, winery to visit, walking trail to discover or hidden corner of the valley waiting to surprise us.

This is life in our part of the world, and it is pretty special!
