5 Bathroom Tips that could save your marriage. Bathroom Saver Series, and this one is all about setout.

Tap placement first. Put it out of the splash zone. It sounds obvious until you are standing there getting drenched waiting for the water to come good. Ours sits to the side so you can turn it on, let it run, then get in.

The niche ledge. Mitred edge over a trim every time, it just looks better.

You need fall so water does not pool, but be careful, because too much fall and nothing will sit on it. That is a very easy thing to get wrong on site.

The shower seat is my personal favourite. We had almost nothing to reference when we built it, so we worked it out ourselves. Just under 50cm high, around 40cm deep. Sit back, water falls in front of you, shave your legs, wash the dog. It is a whole vibe.

And put a hook on the inside wall. Daz’s board shorts and un**es used to live in full view of anyone walking in. Now they do not.

POV: I’m a terrible sleeper. Twenty-five years of renovating and the one room I never got right was the one I sleep in. This rebuild I designed the bedroom around actually resting: morning sun in, ocean noise and breeze through the louvre windows and bedding that doesn’t make me overheat at 2am. The bamboo sheets are from SLEEP INS and they’re doing more for me than the magnesium ever did.

Lesson learnt: floating stone shelves are a frame-stage decision. I found out the expensive way.

Those beautiful stone shelves make this room and I don’t regret putting them in. They need in-wall support and bracing, and that has to be built in while the wall is still open at frame stage.
But a last minute design change meant I added them in after walls were gyprocked 🤦‍♀️. So I put my builders through the pain of ripping out and re-framing a wall that was already done. Avoidable, and it cost me.
Your stonemason will give you the exact specs for the support and bracing the shelves need. So talk to your joinery company and your stonemason early, before the walls are closed up. One conversation at the right time saves you the whole mess.
This is our downstairs kitchen. We set up a self-contained apartment on the lower level, so when the girls want to live independently we lock the hallway door and just like that, we are empty nesters! Or it gives us the option to airbnb later on or if our aging parents ever need taking care of we can do that too. That’s why it’s really important to think about how you want to live as a family not just now but later on when you’re planning your design and layout.

You’d think after the 2.7 million decisions involved in building and renovating a house, decision fatigue would no longer be a thing.

But apparently not.

The second-guessing continues.

Case in point: after a couple of wines and some late-night scrolling, I somehow convinced myself that buying a surfboard was exactly what this corner of our bedroom needed.

Actually, make that TWO surfboards.

Now they’re here and I’m torn.

I love them. They’re beautiful. But do they add to the luxe coastal vibe… or have I ventured into coastal cliché territory?

Tell me honestly…yah or nay

And while we’re at it, what decisions did you struggle with most whilst renovating or styling your home?
