Now that Winter’s here, it’s the perfect season to be exploring Tomaree National Park, hiking the spectacular Tomaree Coastal walk, which is on Worimi Country, Port Stephens!
Why not come and stay beach house and embark on this epic 27km walk, either choosing to do the hike all in one day or take a more leisurely multi-day approach. Whatever adventure track choice you make, rest assured you will discover magnificent aqua-coloured water views, soft white sand, salty breezes, shaded canopy of twisted gums and she-oaks as well as rugged, rocky headland coves and prime whale-watching vantage points along the way.
Our suggestion would be to start Day 1 doing the short 2.2 km walk (approx 2hrs for beginners) up to Tomaree Head Summit. This is the jewel in the crown of all the lookouts in the area and a very photo-worthy viewpoint. This is considered a Grade 5 track walk due to the steepness and many stairs but very doable if you take your time. You can also check out the WWII gun emplacements and torpedo tubes at Fort Tomaree on the same day. If you’re feeling energic you can then choose to do the one-way 7km walk to Fingal Bay ending with a great swim.
Day 2 - One Mile Beach to Birubi Point is a Grade 3, 7.5 km one-way walking track taking 4-5 hrs. This offers Aboriginal culture, sand dunes, salty air, birdlife, rock platforms gentle hills and great swimming. The reward at the end is a camel ride or refreshments at the Crest cafe. Be sure to organise a car shuffle or local bus back to start point.
Check out the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website for more info on the Tomaree coastal walk.
