Port Stephens is gearing up for its iconic New Year's Eve fireworks display at Nelson Bay.

The family-friendly festivities will commence at midday on Tuesday 31 December 2024, with live music and entertainment at D’Albora Marina.

The much-anticipated fireworks show will light up the night sky at 9pm.

Mayor Leah Anderson expressed her excitement about the event, saying it’s the perfect opportunity for the community to celebrate the year gone by and embrace the New Year.

"We're thrilled once again to host this iconic New Year's Eve celebration,” said Mayor Anderson.

“The stunning backdrop of Nelson Bay, combined with the vibrant atmosphere, makes it a truly unforgettable experience,” she added.

Time for a trip 🏝️

An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photo of Port Stephens Bay, 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Sydney, Australia.

Port Stephens is a diverse area that includes towns, beaches, bays, and two types of forests—temperate forests and mangrove forests. Several towns are visible in this image, the largest of which is Nelson Bay. Mangrove forests are supported by the wetland environments along the Karuah River and Branch River. Temperate forests, visible as dark green patches, are protected within national parks.

The area is the traditional home of the Worimi, an Aboriginal nation, and contains many culturally significant sites. Along the coast just south of Port Stephens Bay is Worimi National Park.

Port Stephens Bay is an estuarine system due to the exchange of water and sediment between the Karuah and Branch rivers with the Pacific Ocean. About 1 kilometer offshore of Yacaaba Head are the Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah Islands, which include the John Gould Nature Reserve. The waters within Port Stephens Bay and the nearby coastline are protected within the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park. https://go.nasa.gov/3Dvzl7C
