Just a 20 minute walk from Cooks Hill Chalets - well worth the views!...
What do you know about the Obelisk? Here's a few things we know...
The first navigational marker on the site was built way back in 1820 - it was known as the Government Flour Mill. During a strong wind it would grind 10 bushels of wheat per hour.
Then, in 1847 the Government decided to demolish the mill, which caused quite the hullabaloo in shipping quarters, where it was claimed that the old windmill was a guiding mark for mariners entering the harbour. After much back and forth, the Government was propelled to act, and in 1850 the Obelisk was erected on the spot where the old windmill stood.
Did you know that this popular picnic, photography and walking spot had such history? Now....what the heck is a bushel!?
Local photographer, Chantelle Peek, captured this stunning image of the Obelisk recently. It makes us want to grab the picnic blanket and sit ourselves on that hill from sun-up to sun-down.
