Why shallow dishes of water matter in the hot weather - no matter where you live 🥹

This was at my old place in smiths gully, Victoria a few years ago

10/01/2026

The irony that this first meeting with Roy, a steer I met in 2016 near where I used to live in Smiths Gully, appears in my memory feed today - just after I have read that the sanctuary he now live at has been impacted by the big bushfires down there 😞

If you’ve followed this page for a long time you’ll know the story of how I was able to orchestrate his rescue at Pakenham Market at the 11th hour 😬 and how Kathy at Gunyah Animal Healing Sanctuary in Yarck so kindly took him in and has cared for him with all the other rescues since (2016)

I’m relieved to say that tho 3 ponies are missing all other rescue animals are safe. Shedding and stables and feed stores have been destroyed tho.

I’ll be sharing a way to help shortly in the comments below - they desperately need feed first and foremost. Gunyah is a registered charity and so any donation over $2 is also tax deductible.

The last Breakfast Club for 2025!

A few of my gal pals and I started a lil “let’s just catch up for a stroll and have breakfast” offshoot from our fortnightly trail runs cos some were injured, returning from injury, or otherwise not running much - and we are always hungry right?! 😅🤌

Today instead of a cafe catchup we met at one of my nearby “trot spots” and then headed back to my place where I served up my ever popular double chocolate waffles 🤌

As we close the chapter that was 2025, I’m feeling relaxed and peaceful- something that I certainly wasn’t always feeling during what was, I think, not one many of us will look back on fondly 😵‍💫

But for me anyway, and I’m sensing in others in my orbit, it was a great year to fully grasp what’s NOT working and what we DONT want to continue or repeat.

I’ve finished out this year in a really good place - and if the 💩 show that preceded it was necessary to bring that to bear, it was worth it.

So into 2026 I shall softly go - grateful, grounded, calm, gently focused on what’s most important to me - and that’s 100% grounded in my values.

My credo for 2026

Keep it simple 💚👌

See ya in 2026 💋

I think he’s ok, judging by the pretty regular/even hop, but he’s got a funny head tilt and mouth slightly open and he looked a bit ribby initially… but maybe he’s had a stoush with another male and feeling a bit stiff? Anyways, he’s here regularly so I’ll keep an eye on him and shoot this one through to the local team -just to be sure.

Merry Christmas Big Guy 🦘💚🙌

And to you lot 🤭😁😁😆😆🎄🎄🎄

I’ve intentionally limited screen time these past weeks - still caring about all the issues I care about, but just limiting the constant bombardment of disturbing news -

Life’s been busy - meaningful and mostly, peaceful - the way I want it to be 🙏

I’m doing some support/carer work for two gorgeous elderly women lately 💚 in addition to the guiding and driving in my eco-tourism role that I’ve been doing the past couple of years - and also the occasional prior B&B guest returning for a few days stay 🥹💚

The mix of the 3 is pretty perfect for me - helping and caring for people AND sharing my passion for wildlife and conservation - honestly, I feel incredibly fortunate 🥹

I intend to maintain those two casual jobs when I re-open the B&B next year - the fresher, simpler (and cheaper 👌) version of The Beet Retreat 💚 which I’m confident will see more guests being able to justify/afford a stay with me in these times when many have to carefully weigh up where they direct their hard earned income.

I was thinking today, as I often do, how the things I enjoy and treasure most in life are basically free .. well, ok, aside from my massage chair 😅 which is my absolute favourite “thing” in life these past several months 🤣 and it was definitely not “basically” anything🤣 let alone free 😬😆😅) but I digress 🤭

It has always has been nature based for me. Sunrise, clouds, trees, night sounds… views from high places, still lakes, the way bark curls from a eucalypt… quietly watching wildlife going about their day, the little pink pads of a cats 🐾 paw, bees feeding from my vegetable garden, observing the development of flowers to fruit on my little fruit trees, watching birds bathe 🥹, the sound of wind in trees 🥹 frog and insect song at night, the way light falls at the bookends of days…

Anyway - I could write a book about all the things that fill my heart with quiet joy every single day and the deep gratitude I have in being “that” kind of person who sees it and feels it… it’s no small thing that…

Here’s to more of that in our day to day lives - xx

🌧️ CHECK FOR WILDLIFE IN NEED 🐨💚

With the recent wild weather across Brisbane and South East Queensland, many native animals may be injured, disoriented or in shock. You can make a real difference by checking your surroundings once it’s safe to do so.

✅ Look under fallen branches for nests, baby birds, or possums.
✅ Gently wrap injured wildlife in a towel and place them in a ventilated box.
✅ Keep them warm, quiet, and away from pets until help arrives.
🚫 Do not give food or water — this can be harmful to animals in shock.
🚫 Never handle snakes, bats, koalas or large animals — call for expert help.
🚫Do not enter any area that is unsafe - be alert for unstable trees, branches and fallen power lines.

If you find an injured animal, please contact the Wildcare 24/7 Hotline on (07) 5527 2444.
