Before you spend hundreds — or thousands — filling a new garden bed, play with the soil first.

One of the big takeaways from our first G&T Club Garden Session: know what you’re buying, where it comes from and how it’s actually going to behave in your garden.

Grab a bucketful. Test it. Check the pH. Grow something sensitive in it. See what happens before the truck turns up with 15 metres of the stuff. 😂

Because apparently buying 300 dahlias and then wondering where you’re going to plant them isn’t considered good garden planning…

🌸🏆 WE DID IT AGAIN! EXCELLENCE IN HORTICULTURE! 🏆🌸

We’re incredibly proud to share that The Olde Creamery has once again been recognised for Excellence in Horticulture, winning the award for the second consecutive time at our local biennial Moira Shire business awards!

Two years on, our little farm has grown in ways we could only have dreamed of. And while we were the only entrant in our category, knowing that people in our community took the time to nominate, vote and recognise our efforts means the world to us. ❤️

🌱 FROM THREE ACRES TO GARDENS ACROSS AUSTRALIA!

What started as a joke, to a little side hustle, our little three-acre block in Numurkah has grown into a business specialising in Dahlias sending plants and tubers across the country, and a growing floral company.

One of our biggest achievements this year has been gaining the accreditation and approvals to ship into Tasmania and Western Australia — a massive milestone for a tiny farm!

❤️ IT TAKES A VILLAGE (AND A FAIR BIT OF CHAOS!)

Our farm is more than a business. It’s a community of wonderful staff, volunteers, friends and supporters who bring laughter, knowledge, hard work and friendship to our little patch of dirt.

A special thank you to Gareth, our Head of Rooting & Logistics 🌱🤣 — the growing, propagating and figure it out man behind so much of what we do. This quick thinking saves the day when like yesterday halve of the stage toppled over the edge of the stage!!

Jamie, whose love of technology, clever systems and improving efficiency, combined with an endless drive and passion for dreaming up the next Olde Creamery project, keeps us constantly moving forward, and the books balanced. Sourcing stock, working the paddock of blooms, seeding.

To our team and volunteers — you’re an enormous part of this achievement. Thank you! ❤️

🌸 A WIN FOR THE LITTLE GROWERS!

We see this as a win for every micro farmer out there. The backyard growers, small-acreage farmers and those juggling outside jobs, unpredictable seasons and a never-ending to-do list.

You don’t need hundreds of acres or a massive workforce to make a meaningful contribution to Australian horticulture.

Sometimes a little patch of dirt, determination, innovation and a healthy dose of stubbornness are enough!

Thank you to everyone who nominated, voted, supported and believed in our little farm. This award belongs to all of you too!

Now, back to work… because the dahlias don’t care that we’ve won an award and we got orders to get to you!!!🤣

Seeing a flat end on your dahlia tuber? Don’t panic 🌱

Yes — some of our tubers have been deliberately cut.

Why? We check suspicious or damaged ends for rot before they leave us. Cutting back the end lets us make sure the tuber is clean, healthy and viable inside.

A flat or freshly cut end does not mean the tuber is dead or damaged beyond use. If it has a viable crown/eye and the tuber itself is sound, it will grow perfectly well.

So if yours arrives looking a little “chopped” on the end — yep, we’ve checked it, and yep, it’s good to grow! 🌸

We all want that gorgeous wall of blooms… but what’s happening underneath the soil matters just as much as what we see above it.

Kelly learnt this one through trial and error: roses like their own space.

Plant them too close together and their roots start competing for the same water and nutrients — and sometimes the stronger roses simply win.

The result? Two roses thriving while their poor neighbours are basically living off scraps. 😂

The same thinking applies when planting near established trees and other plants with hungry root systems.

🌹 Give them room.
💦 Give them access to water.
🌱 Give those roots somewhere to go.

As Kelly puts it, roses are basically: “This is my space. This is my water. This is my fertiliser. Go away everyone else.” 😂
