The roses have arrived. The hole is dug. Now what? 👀

Kelly walks us through getting a bare-root rose into the ground properly — and one of the big things to watch is those roots.

🌹 Nice, loose soil at the bottom
🌹 Position the roots so they’re pointing down, not sideways or curling around
🌹 If a root is ridiculously long, it can be trimmed so it sits properly
🌹 Backfill and add some water partway through to help the soil settle around the roots
🌹 Finish filling… then water, water, water, water! 💦

You’re setting those roots up to head down into the soil looking for moisture, rather than hanging around near the surface.

And apparently just shoving it in a hole and hoping for the best isn’t the official technique. Who knew. 😂

Go give Wagner’s Rose Nursery a follow, check out their range online and have a wander through the website — there are still some beauties to discover.

And if this series has you suddenly planning a rose patch… good timing! Selected varieties are currently 20% off for the last few weeks of their sale. 👀🌹

🌱 Want to learn how we REALLY propagate our dahlias?

This isn’t just a quick “here’s where to make the cut” tutorial.

Our Online Dahlia Cuttings Workshop takes you through the whole process we use here at The Olde Creamery — the stuff we’ve learnt through actually propagating hundreds and hundreds of dahlias.

We cover:

🌱 How and when to take your cuttings
✂️ Preparing and taking the perfect cutting
🪴 Our potting mix and propagation setup
🛒 Where we actually buy our supplies
🌿 Rooting, feeding, potting on and aftercare
🐛 The pests that love dahlias almost as much as we do — and how we manage them
🤦 What goes wrong (because it does!) and how to troubleshoot it
🌸 How to turn your favourite dahlia into a whole bench of new plants

You get over an hour of practical video instruction PLUS our comprehensive written guide, so you can watch the process and have something beside you to refer back to when you’re actually doing it.

The aim isn’t just to get a cutting to root.

It’s to give you the confidence and knowledge to propagate dahlias properly yourself, season after season.

And when you think about what we happily spend on a single dahlia tuber… learning how to turn that one plant into many suddenly makes a lot of sense. 😉

Learn the process we use on the farm and start multiplying your own collection. 🌱✂️

🌱 Garden smarter, not harder!

Dutch hoes are a garden-bed essential — perfect for quickly slicing through young weeds just below the soil surface without digging everything up.

They’re great for:
• Keeping veggie patches and garden beds tidy
• Tackling weeds while they’re still small
• Working around established plants
• Covering larger areas without spending the afternoon on your knees!

A quick run through the garden regularly can save you a much bigger weeding job later. 🙌

Pop in and check out our range of Dutch hoes and get those spring gardens under control! 🌿

We all want that gorgeous wall of blooms… but what’s happening underneath the soil matters just as much as what we see above it.

Kelly learnt this one through trial and error: roses like their own space.

Plant them too close together and their roots start competing for the same water and nutrients — and sometimes the stronger roses simply win.

The result? Two roses thriving while their poor neighbours are basically living off scraps. 😂

The same thinking applies when planting near established trees and other plants with hungry root systems.

🌹 Give them room.
💦 Give them access to water.
🌱 Give those roots somewhere to go.

As Kelly puts it, roses are basically: “This is my space. This is my water. This is my fertiliser. Go away everyone else.” 😂

Before you spend hundreds — or thousands — filling a new garden bed, play with the soil first.

One of the big takeaways from our first G&T Club Garden Session: know what you’re buying, where it comes from and how it’s actually going to behave in your garden.

Grab a bucketful. Test it. Check the pH. Grow something sensitive in it. See what happens before the truck turns up with 15 metres of the stuff. 😂

Because apparently buying 300 dahlias and then wondering where you’re going to plant them isn’t considered good garden planning…

🌱 Set yourself up for success before you plant.

🌸 WHAT’S A BREEDER ROYALTY — AND WHY DO WE PAY IT?

When you buy Australian bred dahlias from The Olde Creamery, a little piece of that sale goes back into our dahlia community - ideally the person who created it.

And we reckon that’s exactly how it should be.

Creating a new dahlia variety doesn’t happen overnight. Breeders can spend years growing, selecting, trialling and refining seedlings before one earns a name and is released into the world.

So when we’re lucky enough to grow and sell varieties that have been shared with us through a breeder, we operate a Breeder Royalty Donation Program. Propagation rights on the whole don’t exist for Dahlias.

🌱 How does it work?

For participating varieties, we keep track of the plants and tubers we propagate and sell. A royalty amount from those sales is then donated back to the breeder \($1 D2C, $0\.50c for wholesale\) — when someone has passed or we haven’t setup an agreement with a breeder - rather than just absorb it ourselves we pay it a local state Club or to this year the national research account setup by the Dahlia Society of Australia.

It means one dahlia purchase can keep giving long after it leaves the breeder’s garden.

For us, it’s about more than just having beautiful varieties to sell. It’s about respecting the person behind the flower, recognising the years of work that went into creating it, and making sure Australian growers and breeders are supported to keep creating, experimenting and sharing.

From our little flower farm in Northern Victoria, those breeder donations are already adding up — over $1770 have been donated in the past two seasons and and if we add up our enthusiastic auction bidding - which also help fund the above - that bring that total close to $4500! That’s something we’re incredibly proud of. 🌸

You have the option during checkout to contribute $1 yourself. No pressure at all. We always pay it regardless of customer contributions.

You’re not just buying a dahlia. You’re helping support the person who created it, a local Club or the DSA fund vital research into viruses and other Dahlia related findings — and perhaps even helping someone fund the next big one one. ❤️
