In light of the Perth boat show over the weekend, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to answer some of the most common questions we received! 🛥️
Q: What is the best time of year to visit?
A: The best time to visit the Mackerel Islands is from March to November, with warm, sunny days and comfortable temperatures. Winter is popular for escaping the cold and spotting whales, while travelling between school holidays offers a quieter island escape. If you’re interested in turtle activity, September and October are great months to visit.
Q: Where do i park my car & boat trailer?
A: Secure overnight parking is available on the mainland in Onslow for cars, caravans and boat trailers, subject to availability. Prices are $25 per car or motorhome/campervan, $30 per car and boat trailer (per night).
Q: How far from mainland?
A: It is roughly a 45 minute (22km) crossing over from the coast of Onslow - similar to heading over to Rottness Island.
Q: Do we have fuel?
A: Yes, refuelling is available daily and can be arranged at the Island kiosk. We sell Unleaded, please advise us prior to arrival if you require Diesel so we can organise.
Q: How do we off-load everything?
A: Arriving at the island is easy, with our floating jetty making it simple to unload your luggage, supplies and gear. Once you arrive, our team will be there to help unload and transport everything straight to your cabin, so you can settle in and start enjoying island life. When the weather and conditions allow, we may also unload directly from the beach.
Q: Do i have to stay on the island ?
A: Yes, you do need to book accommodation on the island as Thevenard Island and its facilities are exclusively for staying guests. Camping or sleeping aboard your boat is also not permitted due to permits and safety requirements.
Q: What cooking facilities are avaliable?
A: The beachfront cabins each have a Weber BBQ and a kitchen equipped with a stovetop, oven, microwave, full size fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, plus pots, pans, crockery, cutlery glassware and utensils. You just need to BYO food which you can pre-order for pick up at the Onslow General Store to take over.
Q: Do we have a tender?
A: Our tender is only as reliable as the people who use it, so we recommend bringing your own tender if you can. Alternatively, we have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available for guests to use to get to and from your boat.
Q: How much are moorings ?
A: Moorings cost $20 per boat, per night and require boats to be min 5m and max 9m.
Q: Is it only for fishing?
A: No, there is plenty to enjoy off the boat too! You can also enjoy snorkelling, kayaking, swimming, beachcombing, wildlife spotting, beach games and some unforgettable sunsets.
