Some nights in Western Australia, the sky decides to do something extraordinary.

The Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights, is one of the great bucket list experiences of the southern hemisphere. And in 2023, a rare geomagnetic storm pushed it far enough north that people across WA looked up and found their sky on fire. Pink. Magenta. Purple. Columns of light from the horizon.

Not every night. Not even every year. But when it happens, WA is one of the few places close enough to civilisation that you don't need a plane ticket to Antarctica to see it.

Keep an eye on the aurora forecasts when you're on the Sunset Coast. Head away from the city lights, find an elevated spot, and look south.

Western Australia holds surprises like this in reserve. That's part of the deal.

They call it Lucky Bay.

On a beach like this, you start to understand why. The sand is white enough to reflect the sky. The water runs from aqua at the shore to a deep, impossible cobalt further out. The whole thing curves around a granite headland in a shape that looks designed.

Lucky Bay in Esperance has been voted Australia's best beach. Multiple times. Scientists measured the sand and found it to be among the whitest in the world. Pure quartz, ground fine over millions of years, so pale and fine it squeaks when you walk on it.

This is Western Australia. Two hours on a plane from Perth, or the kind of road trip you talk about for years after.

We're on the Sunset Coast. Lucky Bay is the reason to keep exploring.

You can never see too many sunsets.

West Australian sunsets especially.

There is a particular colour that happens here in the final minutes before the sun drops below the ocean. Pink bleeding into gold bleeding into something you don't have a name for. The kind of light that makes strangers stop and look in the same direction.

This is a west-facing coastline. Every evening, without fail, it earns its name.

Sorrento Beach faces the Indian Ocean. The golden hour starts around 76 steps from our front door. Bring something cold. Find a spot in the sand. Let the sky do the rest.

There is something about Busselton Jetty at twilight that stops you in your tracks...

The blue boathouses. The tide pulling back to reveal rippled sand. The sky doing something gentle and impossible between purple and orange. It is the kind of scene that earns its place on a wall.

Busselton Jetty is 2.5 hours south of Sorrento Beach and genuinely worth the drive. The longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching nearly 2 kilometres into Geographe Bay. Walk it, take the jetty train, or just stand at the entrance and watch the light change.

The South West is always there when you need it. And it always looks like this.
