Helpful tip of the day! If you're living in an area where mini-split air-conditioning is the norm, are you doing it right? I know this is late after our HELLA HOT SUMMER but I still find this very helpful!
Here in Puerto Morelos, Mexico it is very hot and humid most of the year. If you look at the settings on your a/c remote, you'll see that it has lots of different modes available, but you may be wondering what's the difference? There are 2 modes that you're most likely to need.
First, is the snowflake option (and no, that's not a political statement! ๐), aka the cooling option. To save money, I'd recommend setting it to about 24โฐ to start and then adjusting from there if you need to. It makes a HUGE difference to me if there is a ceiling fan moving the air around, so you'll probably find that if you leave the fan on you can bump the temperature up higher than you would with it off.
Second, and I would say the setting we should probably be using most of the time, is the "droplet" setting. This is the a/c mode that will dehumidify the air in your home, which is what you want since humidity is what makes the home feel sticky or clammy and damp and can lead to mold, QUICKLY. Not only will the dehumidifier air feel cooler to you, but it is also less expensive to run and better for your home.
Remember that a/c should be shut off when you sweep or create lots of dust of any kind so it doesn't suck all that dust into the filters. You should clean the filter every few weeks, ideally; at minimum have the unit deep cleaned by a professional every 6 months or so.
If you see drips of water coming down the wall between services, especially if it appears rusty, call to have them come earlier. Also, if your unit isn't cooling well, it's important to get that looked at sooner, rather than later because it could be a sign of a refrigerant leak which could damage your unit if it isn't refilled in time. This is common also with improper install and sometimes you just can't change that drip coming down the wall.
Do you have any tips you would like to add to save money on the electric bill?
