Happy Bastille Day 🇫🇷✨✨! Fête nationale le 14 juillet
France's National Day to commemorate the "Storming of the Bastille" in 1789. The start of the French Revolution, which overturned the Royal Family, King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette, and laid the foundations for France to becoming a Republic.

Closer to home, a year earlier, a French expedition led by Jean Francois de Galaup, comte de La Perouse sailed into Botany Bay. La Perouse, a French Explorer was commissioned by King 🤴 Louis XVI of France to complete the Pacific discoveries of James Cook.

Upon sailing ⛵️ into Botany Bay La Perouse encountered a British convoy (known later as the "First Fleet") led by Captain Arthur Phillip, who sailed around to what is now Sydney Cove. La Perouse stayed in Botany Bay to chart and explore the area. A few months later, he left Australia bound for New Caledonia, and home but the French crew were never seen again.

After the storming of the Bastille and on the day of his ex*****on, King Louis XVI asked “Any news of La Perouse?”

Not forgotten - La Perouse lives on in our local Randwick area: as the suburb, La Perouse, the road and our property "Perouse" are proudly named after him.
