Clifton was founded by Thomas Jabez Amesbury Frankcomb, who was originally a convict sentenced to transportation for malicious stabbing and wounding.

Frankcomb built the sandstone cottage that eventually became the Clifton homestead in 1865, and it was expanded by subsequent generations. Four generations of Frankcombs maintained the orchard at Clifton, which grew to include hops and cherries.

Today, it stands proud and restored and offers boutique, heritage accomondation to visitors to Tasmania's Huon Valley.
