Today doing some much needed spring cleaning I came across these two awards. I have been entering my native bee honey in honey competitions for many years, since 2012. Long before there were organised native bee honey competitions. I don't enter competitions for the large monetary rewards from winning. I enter honey competitions to highlight the vary unique honey to the public make them aware that native stingless bees do produce a small amount of honey and it can be harvested for human consumption.

Hey folks I'm not smart enough to post the web link. Go to ABC radio Qld country hour today's edition. You may have to install the ABC listen app. It's a good listen on Varroa Mite. About all the wild European hives dying from the mite, that have been relied for pollination of crops over time. Native bee pollination might take a big leap forward over the next couple of years until the control of Varroa Mite is worked out and wild European colonies re-establish in the wild. Don't know how long that will take. Get your native bee hives ready to go!

Lisa Warman attended the recent ANBA Rockhampton Branch Meeting and conducted a very informative talk on solitary native bees to the group. The talk inspired me to do more for the solitary native bees. Over recent years I have seen an odd blue banded bee on my tomato plants flowers. There has also been orange tail resin bees around when hives have been split and has been evidence of leaf cutter bees in my garden. After listening to Lisa's talk I have fixed a couple of cut logs, drilled with 3mm holes the other log drilled with 8mm holes. I also made two earth style nesting facilities. With a mixture of soil and potting mix. Just dampened the mixture enough to bring it together like wet sand, then compacted it with timber. After the soil dried I drilled 10mm holes for nesting. I have since planted a bee friendly garden. I have bees nesting in a solitary bees viewing frame. Hoping I will attract the solitary bees to my garden and they will use the nesting facilities provided.
Here's hoping!
I know I wasn't the only person Lisa inspired at the meeting, she has lite the flame in a few of us.
Big thanks to Lisa for the inspirational talk. We are lucky to have a person in our region with so much knowledge on solitary native bees.

I inspected a couple of my hives today. Two were what I call my mongrel hives which I use exclusively for brood lifts. Which are 320mm x 320mm x 190mm high. Very easy to access the brood from the top.
I also joined the failed to requeen club today. My first, very disappointing. Still has good numbers of bees coming and going which certainly fooled me until I opened the hive. No pests. I may try hooking it up to a srong hive for awhile. Third photos shows totally empty brood cavity.

Completed a transfer from a ten year old box in very poor condition all the joints had opened up, into a large vertical split hive box. A very healthy hive with a large brood mass and huge numbers of bees. (very aggressive Hockingsi) Transfer took about two hours with the vacuuming of all the bees from the old box and dumping them into the new box. The hive had an enormous amount of pollen in two of the compartments. Also large amounts of Torelliana resin and seeds taking up much needed space within the hive. I captured the honey and have to run it through the filter. I estimate there will be 1.5 - 2 litres of honey. The hive is located in a fantastic area with plenty of flowering plants in an established housing estate. The hive will continue to thrive.
