The question often arises as to whether a product (or service) qualifies for this grant. If your product is manufactured in Australia it is very likely to qualify. However, for products manufactured overseas the equation can be a little tricky.

The big question you need to answer is - Does Australia derive a ‘significant net benefit’ from its sale overseas? Some factors that contribute to ‘net benefit’ include Australian design and IP, marketing, packaging and margin.

Margin itself can qualify as ‘significant net benefit’ i.e. if the overseas manufacturing cost is $1 and the retail price is $4 then the $3 margin flow to Australian counts as Australian content.

If your product is manufactured overseas don’t despair it is certainly possible that it will qualify!

We are now officially approved EMDG (Export Market Development Grant) consultants

If you are currently exporting goods and/or services or are planning to do, the EMDG is an excellent resource which can return a good proportion of your international marketing expenditure.

The grant can be a little tricky to do the first time, so it’s a good idea to get some advice to make sure you’re on the right track.

Eligible expenditures claims fall into 9 key areas:
Overseas representatives; Marketing consultants; Overseas marketing visits; Overseas communications; Free samples; International trade fairs, Seminars, In-store promotions; Promotional literature & advertising; Overseas buyers visits; Registration and/or insurance of eligible intellectual property.

You may claim for expenditure on specific export promotional activities undertaken during the financial year before the application period. For your first grant you may claim expenses incurred over the last two financial years.

Warning! Be careful when researching for government grants a company calling themselves 'Business Aid Centre Online Grants Directory' (or similar) have been masquerading as a part of the government and requesting that you pay for access to the Government Grants information

Do not pay! It is a scam. No government department requests payment for access to information.

Westpac Grant - ‘200 businesses of Tomorrow’ is well worth checking out if you have a new innovative business. 200 businesses will be selected by Westpac and provided financial & operational support, plus 20 of these businesses business will receive a funding and service package worth over $100,000. This grant is a good one to get started on the path to finding funding for your business. The bonus is that the application is easy to fill in. Closes 14th November. Just remember to get someone to proof read your application before you submit it.

Innovation needs to be watered – don’t under estimate the value of a good mentor.

Be sure to have a good mentor within reach. Believe me, this will be one of your most valuable asset! Every innovator needs someone who will listen to their crazy ideas (without criticising) and encourage them to workshop the idea. Often really great inspirations are lurking just under the surface, they just need someone to help bring them to the forefront.
