Beechworth Asylum is one of the most confronting old hospital sites in Australia.

Opened in 1867 in north-east Victoria, it sat on a hill overlooking the town like something grand and official. At its peak, it housed more than 1,200 patients and hundreds of staff across dozens of buildings, with its own farm, workshops, theatre, sports grounds and cemetery.

Over 128 years, more than 9,000 patients died there.

Most were buried in unmarked graves on the grounds. No marble headstones. No grand memorials. Just thousands of people who entered the institution and never really came back into the world outside.

The detail that really gets you is how hard it was to leave. According to the old admission system described in the file, only two signatures were needed to admit someone, but eight were needed to discharge them.

That basically tells you the whole story. Getting in was easy. Getting out was the hard part.
